Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The student (younger student comes with parent) comes to the studio where I offer a free consultation, followed by a lesson. This gives the student & teacher an opportunity to know each other and experience the vocal technique.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
BM, BA, MM (3) University degrees in performance and teaching. Voice major with Piano Minor.
Performances: musical comedy theaters, opera theaters, Art song recitals, guest soloist in oratorio performances.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Discount offered for students who take more than one lesson per week.
How did you get started teaching?
My first job: licensed music teacher K thru 12, and taught private lessons in singing, piano, and performance after school as well.
Took a respite from teaching to have 2 successful careers in musical comedy shows and then opera. Returned to private teaching with these experiences as a great support for my private teaching.
What types of students have you worked with?
Private teaching: Mostly female with all types of personalities and ethnic backgrounds.
Younger students are taught a full music course in singing, piano, writing and reading music, etc.
Piano & voice students Age range: youngest age 6, oldest age 40 to 45. Speech students up to age 65.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Judging & evaluating 18 finalist singers for grants sponsored by Career Bridges. The winners performed at the Metropolitan Club, NYC, between delicious meal courses. The best!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Choose an experienced teacher with knowledge of bel canto vocal technique because it is all about proper use of one’s breath for vocal expression & music interpretation no matter what voice venue a person chooses. It is also most important to avoid any injury of the vocal cords, so sing on the breath rather than throat!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What kind of music do you like to listen to? Name a favorite song. Then ask if the teacher can help you with your goals?
Can the teacher help you with your breath control?
Does the teacher teach the whole person when it comes to performance appearance & expression?
