Las Vegas Piano Instruction

Ronald Maltais · Las Vegas, NV

What or who inspired you to start teaching?

My first formal piano lesson was taken when I was 8 years old, but I had already played for about 4 years, mainly by ear, watching my older brother and sister to imitate what they were doing. My father was a radio announcer and I constantly heard music in our home when he was playing recordings to decide what to broadcast. I constructed piano arrangements of any music I enjoyed.

What do you love most about your job?

I am currently directing a music program in a private international high school. Although I am mainly working with high school age students, I have taught piano lessons on a private basis throughout my career. Without any special training I became known as a specialist working with very young children. It requires a very different approach, and I have also developed techniques to assist children with learning disabilities. The overall spectrum of private teaching has included students of all ages. As a composer I have been able to assist students who are working on creative projects involving greater emphasis on theory and composition. As a trained vocalist, my work occasionally involves teaching voice and coaching singers.

What types of students have you worked with?

As a child I was shy and introverted. Music was my real voice. At a keyboard I was able to express myself with confidence. I believe this confidence eventually carried over into everything else I was doing. Young music students who are taking regular music lessons at an early age (4 to 7 years old) will later excel in other areas. Many studies have shown this. Although I have never had children of my own I am often asked about the correct age for beginning music lessons. At the very least, a physical presence of a piano will enrich any home, and when a child begins to play without formal guidance I am reminded of my own primary musical experiences.
