Jimmy N. says, " Mrs. Juliana Kuo was one of the most piano treasured teachers in Northern Virginia. My son learned piano from her for 3 years and his piano skill improved tremendously. After she moved to Vegas, many of her students struggled to find a new teacher that is up to her teaching level. Mrs. Kuo has a wonderful rapport with people od all ages, especially children. Her ability to connect with her students, her dedication to teaching and her knowledge are truly superior. Her calm and friendly nature is something most students look for in their teachers. Now as she begins her life in Vegas, I have no doubts that she will achieve the same success that she had here in Virginia. I strongly recommend Mrs. Juliana Kuo to you without reservation. A graduate (MA, piano performance) from the Royal Academy of Music, I focus on teaching intermediate and advanced piano students. Working with them on challenging repertoire to set and achieve their artistic vision for their performance, piano lessons are intended to be a combination of interpretation and technique, and last at minimum 45 minutes. As a teacher, I aim to connect with the student's specific learning style to customize a plan that devleops them as a performer and an artist. As a teacher, I love seeing students grow their love for music, and one of my favorite parts of the job is watching them become more confident with approachi...

Your Piano Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

I am an older student and have taken lessons from a few piano teachers over the years. Alexis is by far my favorite. She teaches not only how to play but theory as well. Very patient, extremely knowledgeable, can't say enough great things about her. Wouldn't ever want a different teacher. I feel very lucky!

My son was referred to Ms Juliana in 2013 when he was entering 6th grade and looking for more of a challenge. He started playing piano in 2nd grade, and his first teacher had taken lessons herself from Juliana. She suggested that Sean would do well with longer, more intense lessons. He did! He was hesitant at first, knowing Juliana had higher expectations, but she helped him excel and enjoy playing at the same time. He entered several competitions and festivals, something he was nervous about before starting lessons with her. His favorite pieces were duets with Juliana. They sounded beautiful!

Ready Set Gig is a great place to learn how to play music. In my experience other music schools teach you either how to play your instrument or just how to play songs. But Doug and his team at Ready Set Gig are different. You get the full experience of learning how to play songs and be apart if a band as well as the music theory you need to know for mastering your instrument. Plus their music theory book is loaded with knowledge and the staff + instructors really catered to my needs as a musician. It's a great environment and you can tell when you walk in the door.

I have had lessons before, with a few different teaching styles. Braydon stands apart in his ability to instruct in a way that a beginner like myself can easily grasp! Starting a new venture in life is always intimidating, but with Braydon you will quickly feel comfortable and confident!
