Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Visit http://www.robmitzner.com/lessons and read the FAQ!
Then email me to set up a free phone chat so we can discuss your goals and experience. If it seems like a good fit, you can go on the site book/schedule a single lesson or a block of 4 or 8. I will send a Zoom link and other instructions before the first lesson.
For beginners, I usually start with things like how to set up your kit, how to hold the sticks, basic patterns and coordination, counting. We'll get you playing along with your favorite tunes in no time! For students with more experience, I'll listen to you play, we'll chat about your goals and come up with a plan. I try to personalize each lesson as much as possible!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I grew up in the DC-area and started playing at age 12. I did jazz shows, played with rock bands and got a ton a experience playing with older musicians. I also had an amazing teacher who inspired to me work hard and improve on the instrument, and I know how much of a difference that can make when you're learning. I went to college and had another great teacher, and then started playing full time in Boston before moving to NYC. Since then I've done over 150 shows a year for 15 years and recorded on over 50 commercially available albums across many genres.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
All the info is on http://www.robmitzner.com/lessons, however here are the basics:
Single 60-Min Lesson: $75
4 Lesson Block: $290
8 Lesson Block: $565
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching privately right 15 years ago and have kept a busy schedule since! I also write educational articles for Drumeo and other publications, and have had many lesson videos featured on the Drum Talk TV.
What types of students have you worked with?
I teach students of most ages and experience levels, however I don't typically take anyone below age 12.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone who makes you feel good about playing and makes you want to practice and get better. That's what my teachers did for me.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Again, check out the FAQs on http://www.robmitzner.com/lessons, but it's good to think about why you want to take lessons, what kinds of music you like, what your experience level is and what kind of gear and practice setup you have.
