I have been a PGA Professional for 10 years and teaching golf for over 15 years. Throughout these 15 years I have had a chance to study and work along side some of the greatest teachers in the game. I have experience in teaching all levels of players as well as professionals. Each lesson is different and depends on the ability and what each student is looking to accomplish. I am a big believer in using technology, such as video and launch monitor, so each students swing can be viewed and have all of the ball and club data measured so there is never any guessing.

My father is a lawyer and my mother a physiotherapist social worker, so coming of age there was never any lack of inspiration around the home. You could say its in my blood. My inspiration to teach came about organically. As my golf skill level has increased over the past 20 years, I helped other friends and strangers understand various aspects of the game better out of the kindness of my heart. I've always been a natural teacher. People have mentioned how easily I'm able to explain a concept or skill. They say, "Sam you should be a life coach or something." I enjoy seeing people learn new things, as I too am a sponge for knowledge - especially when that information can turn one into a better performer and competitor. Teaching / coaching is not something I've ever been far from in life. A natural leader, I always wanted to help others see the light and understand the world around us better. Giving knowledge is the ultimate reciprocal gift. The moment something clicks for a pupil, or a friend because of my words or instructions, that's a beautiful moment for both of us.
What do you love most about your job?
People come to me so that I can share with them something I truly LOVE. How many people can say they get compensated to do what they love? Being out of doors, one on one with a new friend / pupil, imparting knowledge in a calm, quiet natural environment is an ideal way to use time. Being able to be productive and happy at the same time creates a healthy mindset for me in all departments of my life and brain. Golf is a zen activity. Ever wonder why yoga and meditation teachers are always so darn happy? Same goes for us golfers. We love what we do and it just glows from the inside out. Seeing my students nail a long putt or hit a great golf shot - the look on their face - my heart literally skips a beat. The best part about teach golf if that there are so many parallels we can draw between the game and our outside lives. One day at a time, one shot at a time. In order to be happy we need to live in the moment and in order to succeed in golf, we need to focus on one singular shot. Being present, pushing away the distractions, and being the best you can be in that moment is a sort of nirvana. This is how we not only make a great golf shot, but also how we become better human beings.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with pupils age 5 and up. The wonderful thing about golf is it's similar to chess: takes a day to learn and a lifetime to master. Anyone can play! There are even blind golfers, I'm not joking. The majority of my pupils are less advanced than about a 5 handicap which is my level. I teach all levels however and given the chance to teach a professional I'd still be useful from a mental and psychological perspective. Working with professional golfer is a dream. Teaching beginners, intermediate and advanced amateurs is a great gig too and I enjoy each unique challenge my diverse group of students present.
Tell us about your passion for teaching
My passion for teaching probably began when I was 15. I was learning Spanish at a pace faster than my peers. Many other students could not understand spelling, pronunciation and grammar. I instantly jumped in to explain and found that people listened and learned. That moment you realize you helped, it costs you nothing but your breath and a few minutes to make a difference for someone else is one of the greatest feelings one could ever have. When I was a summer camp counselor I was able to really hone my craft. I give top credit to my parents, my family, and other wonderful role models I was lucky to have growing up. These people gave me the tools to communicate well with others. My life experience, studying, failing and succeeding has all given me the passion and thirst for more knowledge and skill.
What advice would you give aspiring students?
Pay attention. Don't talk too much. Listen first, then speak. Don't EVER think you can't do something. Be yourself. Believe in yourself. Make a plan and trust that plan. Don't make excuses for yourself or anyone else. Work hard. Hustle beats talent when talent won't hustle. Play until you sweat. Help other people whenever you can. Put yourself and your own happiness as a priority in your life. Make healthy choices as much as you can. Have moderation in all things, including moderation. Eat right, sleep right, exercise right, and have fun every day. Focus on advancing your skills in the way that YOU want to, not your parents, nor anyone else. Face failure, head on. Put failure behind you. Don't fear failure ever. Look fear in the eyes and hurdle past it. Accept your actions and your faults as your own. Make note of them and then move on. Learn from the past, but do not dwell on it. Those who do not depend on luck have less bad luck. Excellence is what we habitually do. So whatever you love to do, however you desire to improve, keep it up. Nothing is going to be given to you. You have to go out and earn it. Its a short life, go get it. You can always take things to the next level. Strive for excellence. Be confident. Be brave. Be persistent. Laugh a lot. Never go to sleep angry. Always wake up with positive thoughts. Chose happiness everyday, one day at a time.
