Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My process for working with a student is to first find out what they are looking for in martial arts. Are you looking to really dedicate time to learning or are you looking to just be fit by doing cardio.
My philosophy on teaching is Show, explain, experience and Coach.
1st. I will show you by demonstrating.
2nd. I explain to you the meaning of the form or discipline.
3rd. You will then experience the the form or technique by application.
4th. I will then Coach you while you are doing the form or technique by correcting what needs to be corrected.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been teaching Shotokan, Aikido and Jujitsu for over 25 years. I received my 5th Degree (Shihan) in March of 2018. I believe that with time, communication, repetition and a open mind we all can learn.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I is usually free for the 1st three classes. One time classes are $25 a session because clients may not continue the program because of financial restraints.
Monthly I charge $120.00 classes are three days a week. Tues and Fri 6pm to 8pm and Sat 9am to 11am
Sacred Heart church. 41 Adelphi Street Brooklyn, NY. 11205
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching martial art at our Dojo in Clinton Hills Brooklyn in the late 80's. My Sensei Michael "Bouncy" Bailey use to prep us by allowing us to teach the class once a week. I was green belt at the time and my class mates and I enjoyed playing Sensei for the day.
What types of students have you worked with?
I am now currently working with students from ages 6 to 48 year of age.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I am fond of the fact that my students have to produce their report cards after every semester. I like them knowing that martial arts is more than just a physical discipline. My Sensei did the same to me growing up and is greatly appreciated by my family to this very day. Also I loved the fact that he had a family of his own but we were his extended family.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
1st, be open minded, do your research about the teacher and Art. Also understand that you cannot be a black belt in a day. Be careful when teachers promote students for money and not on merit.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Each Karate System focuses on key techniques and disciplines. Shotokan is hard and fluid. Jujitsu deals with locks and grabs. Aikido throws and misdirection. You should first know what you are looking to study and ask your Sensei to itemize the basic qualifications on obtaining each belt or degree.
