About
I am Maureen...
And I am an artist, lover, and seeker of the Voice. For 33 years, I travelled the globe singing leading soprano roles in the worlds greatest opera houses, and I’m currently continuing a 42 year + career as a singer and actor in theater, musical theater, cabaret, voiceover, and narration. I am Maureen... And for the past 15 years, I have taught voice and given master classes all over the world; at summer festivals, opera programs, colleges and music schools, and maintained private voice studios in New York City and the Berkshires. My students range from 15 to 80 yrs old; aspiring artists, working pros, non-professionals, and all voice types. I teach classical/opera, musical theater, and pop. I am Maureen... And I am a tree hugger, a rising Phoenix, an empath, an advocate for women and against abuse, and a survivor of trauma and sexual assault. And I believe in the power and healing of the human voice.
I offer singing lessons in classical, opera, musical theater, popular and folk music. My students range from amateurs to working professionals. Please visit my website at www.maureenoflynn.
I believe that any good teacher is going to remind students what their body already knows, and knew the moment they were born. We come into the world with perfect projection and no limitation on the breath we take in or the sound we make. And then grown-ups tell us to use our inside voice, and the confusion begins. I help singers find their way back to an organic and natural way of communicating and expressing. Many singers interpret operatic performing as having to put on another face, and add layers to become someone other than or more than who they are themselves. In fact, the opposite is true, in opera and all art forms. As performers, we must take off all of the masks and all of the unnecessary layers, and be wholly and completely ourselves. One of my mantras for all of my students is this: You Are Enough. You are enough, just as you are, and it is you we want to see and hear.
Be all of who you can be. Get to know your body and make friends with it. Breathe in, ground yourself like the roots of a great tree, and send your words out on the wings of your breath.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
in first lessons with students, I begin asking the student what experience they have had with singing and what styles of singing. And then we go back to the beginning and talk about breathing, giving yourself permission to be heard, using your voice healthily, and how to support it in your body. I usually give the student a chance to sing through a couple of songs first to give me an idea of their level of singing.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've been a singer and a actor for him 45 years, and 28 of those were spent singing opera all over the world. Musical theater, straight plays, television, film, voice narration… My life is about the voice, finding it, raising it, and celebrating it.
