It is unusual to find a true music teacher with a balance of education and performing experience. I have about 20 years of experience working with students on a one to one basis, a formal education in music up to the post-graduate level, and several decades of performing experience.

I’ve been teaching guitar, piano and trumpet for 30 plus years and teach both children and adults. I have a number of students who have become professional musicians, including Casey McPherson with Alpha Rev, Mandisa guitarist David May, and worship artist David Brymer. I have a music degree from Colorado University but I get just as much enjoyment from teaching a Mom how to play a children’s song, or from a child who learns their favorite Christmas song. In the end it’s about music and connecting with one another as a community. ... View Profile

James Meade - Guitarist

James Meade - Guitarist

Hello and thank you for your interest in this beautiful instrument.  I've been teaching for a little over a decade now and I enjoy it more now than ever. I love meeting new students because with each person comes a unique personality and learning style. I try to teach each student according to their respective proclivities while helping them to overcome their weaknesses as well. I try to create a fun environment to learn in, provide students with what they're looking for, and also throw in some nice surprises along the way. The eventual goal is to teach a student how to teach themselves. I've found if you mold a musician you're ma ... View Profile

The Music Salon

The Music Salon

Located in the heart of Maderia, The Music Salon was started by guitar teacher Sean McGary in 2011.  After teaching in music store chains for several years, Sean became disillusioned with the typical approach to learning guitar before deciding it was time for a new approach. And The Music Slaon was born.     The Music Salon offers an environment where students would feel welcome and at home, taking pains to avoid the typical, sterile, and impersonal vibe of most music stores. Students are encouraged to learn in the way that makes the most sense for them instead of being forced into a methodology.   Music is ... View Profile

Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.
