Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Our typical process must begin with a consultation and mutual screening process. This is for both parties to fully understand what's involved in training, the level of commitment on both sides. In the interest of full disclosure, we'll walk through our training curriculum, the current state of the industry, home studio set-up, income potential, lesson packages, financing options and more. Then, if the student and coach agree to move forward, a schedule for lessons is set up.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
BIG VOICE Productions has over 30 years experience on both sides of the microphone: as a talent, producer, and casting director. We were educated in radio and television at the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts, Detroit, Michigan.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
A "standard pricing system" implies that there are "standard students" when nothing could be further from the truth. BIG VOICE Productions believes in personal, one-on-one attention for every student. There are no "classes" here, only private sessions. With that being said, we do offer an extremely comprehensive "Pro Package" training course that consists of 25 sessions (one session per week) which consist of a series of exercises ranging from fundamental to advanced. Our package includes a student workbook, free recording software (PC only), hands-on recording training, online audition training, phone & email support during training, free pro microphone available, business and marketing training, 6 professionally-produced VO demos, LinkedIn/YouTube training and much more value than the actual investment...including opportunities to be cast in actual TV and Radio commercials during training and beyond.
How did you get started teaching?
We started teaching quite by happen-stance really. Individuals began requesting private lessons in voice over and basic recording. Our reputation for quality, value-based training grew to reach local talent agencies, ad agencies and production houses who started referring others to us. Eventually it blossomed into formal private instruction in 1998 and we've been training ever since...with now nearly 500 students trained!
What types of students have you worked with?
We have been blessed to have trained students ranging in age, gender and cultural diversity. From 6 years old to 80 years old, male, female, Spanish, Indian, Mother/daughters, two friends, and husband/wife, and even several students with autism.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recents events we have been blessed to be part of: celebrating our 4 year anniversary as the founder of Voice Over Pros of Central Ohio, Oct. 2016; hosting VO workshops in our studios on advanced recording, copy writing and messages on hold; and for the past 4 years, the co-founder of The Midwest Voice Over Conference, Columbus, OH
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Interview the teacher/coach asking questions about their years of experience, curriculum, past students trained, written reviews, and listen to demos they've produced. Then of course if they have a good reputation for integrity with the Better Business Bureau.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should first understand what level of commitment they have in terms of resources and time before signing up for training. They need to understand that any coach represents the industry of which they are looking to enter. The student needs to ask themselves if they have a good work ethic, or are willing to develop one. It also helps if the student has done prior research into their respective field before training begins.
