Over twenty years of playing all my taught instruments has shown me there is not one specific way to teach music to every person, so I change my curriculum for every student and completely customize what you learn to how you learn, and what you're interested in! I started teaching music lessons in after school programs when I was eleven and fell totally in love. I continued to do this for many years driving to neighboring towns, volunteering at church youth groups and local Boys and Girls Club all around my hometown.  In Portland I've been gigging, playing on records, recording music for films, and volunteering every week at Nonprofit Mu ... Hello! My name is Todd and I've been playing music for most of my life. My first instrument was a Casio keyboard when I was about ten years old but as a teenager, I fell in love with the guitar. Over the years I have played in a handful of bands in the St. Louis music scene and toured most of the midwest and the northeast. I recently graduated from Webster University with a BA in music after receiving an AA in guitar performance at SWIC. In college, I learned everything from music theory to conducting as well as playing in the guitar ensemble, jazz ensemble and so on. I believe that playing music is possibly the most fun activity a person can engage in, and learning how to improve at an instrument is a valuable experience that crosses over to many aspects of one’s life, as well as being really exciting and rewarding.  I have been playing guitar for over 10 years, and teaching almost as long. In California, I taught at the Santa Barbara Academy of Rock, Jensen’s Mainstage Summer Camp, The LOUD Program, Goleta Valley Jr. High, as well as many private lessons. Since moving to Portland in 2014, I have had many private students. I enjoy playing guitar in a wide variety of scenarios, from&n ... View Profile

Along with standard approaches, my lessons have a special focus on the psychology and science of music. Music making is about how the human mind processes things like rhythm and harmony, the way we form patterns and expectations, and the way emotions and social associations affect our experiences. I also emphasize creative exploration. I have a classical guitar degree and experience with lots of other styles. I spent a couple years in a full-time pop/rock/jam band. I've reviewed over 800 books on guitar and music education and known many other teachers, so I know what's out there otherwise. My broad perspective lets me adapt lessons for each ... View Profile

What is unique about me is my experience at a young age. I have been in several bands of different genres and I play 6 instruments as well as sing. Having a multi Instrumentalist teacher is an advantage because not only can I teach your instrument of choice but I can teach how your instrument relates and fits in with other instruments. I also have a home studio where I do my lessons. In my studio I have all the instruments of a band. I consider myself a one stop shop. I can help anyone from beginners learning their first chord to the garage band looking for advice on how to take the next step and get out of the garage. I pride myself in my ab ... View Profile

My teaching approach: I take a very personal approach with each individual student. First and foremost, I talk to them about their goals and what they want from playing guitar, or musically in general. Then, I develop a lesson plan based on what their goals and desires are. With each lesson, I give the student the opportunity to choose if they'd like to review a past lesson or lessons, or if they'd prefer to move on to new material. I've found this approach really helps students absorb material easier and tend to feel less overwhelmed. This approach also gives students direct control over their own progression. Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.
