Over twenty years of playing all my taught instruments has shown me there is not one specific way to teach music to every person, so I change my curriculum for every student and completely customize what you learn to how you learn, and what you're interested in! I started teaching music lessons in after school programs when I was eleven and fell totally in love. I continued to do this for many years driving to neighboring towns, volunteering at church youth groups and local Boys and Girls Club all around my hometown.  In Portland I've been gigging, playing on records, recording music for

My teaching approach: Teaching philosophy: I believe in confidence building and using that confidence as the force to accomplish goals. I assess what a student's interests are and gauge where their confidence level is. I then cultivate and grow this confidence within the student by helping them play the things they are interested in. It could be a theme from a movie or something they heard on the radio. Many of the songs people hear everyday are surprisingly simple. Whatever it may be I can break it down and make it playable for even the most timid beginner. Each small success builds and rein

Eighteen years ago Brian Eliason began teaching Music in the Portland area.  As he starting teaching he noticed two big holes in the learning of local students.  First he noticed students who could play by ear well but did not understand the reading the notes.  Second he noticed students who could read notes but had not developed their ability to play by ear.   From this experience he created the Complete Instruction Method, a balanced approach that teaches musicians how to learn music purely by hearing it as well as the skill of reading and understanding sheet music.

Portland Guitar Instruction

Geoff Arnold · Portland, OR

What or who inspired you to start teaching?

My name is Geoff Arnold, and I come from a musical family and began learning with formal classical piano lessons from a renown concert pianist. Within a couple years, I began playing drums, and then guitar and bass, all of which I continue to play, and teach, to this day.

I began teaching, initially as a way to earn money during down time between tours in my musical career. It soon came to me that I am good at sharing information, in part because I had been playing music nearly my whole life, and understand the "language" of music very well, like a second native spoken language.

What do you love most about your job?

The thing I love most about teaching music, it is not a "job" to me, it is a calling, is helping people learn an appreciation for music they can't have simply listening to it. Now they begin to understand what is going on in the songs they hear, and even come to recognize what the instruments are doing musically, theoretically, on some level. How amazing is that?

And since schools are cutting musical education programs, it is even more important people such as myself are out there to inspire a love for listening to and playing music.

What types of students have you worked with?

The kind of students I work with has ranged from the young (6 years old is the youngest I'll teach, and only for piano; all other instruments I start at 8-10 years) on up to retired people seeking to remain active in their later years. And nothing keeps the mind engaged more than playing music!

Tell us about your passion for teaching

I live and breathe music, and have played music for over 53 years, since I was eight years old. It has never been out of my life since starting the journey. I play every day, I learn every day (and even learn from my students, too!), and I grow better and better in playing and writing music. I will continue to write, perform and teach for the remainder of my years on earth, all to bring just one more person into the world of creating music!

What advice would you give aspiring students?

For anyone who wishes to learn to play music, you have to understand it is a commitment. You won't sound great on day One... or Two. Above all, I am honest with my students. But one day you will wake up, start playing your instrument and it will be magical. This can take as little as three months, and when it happens, you'll be hooked for life. So you have to hang on and keep practicing and learning until that moment. It will be worth every minute because you'll understand in that magical moment what music really is all about. No words can describe it. It's just amazing!

I hope that gives you a good overview of my passion, my love and my devotion to music. I've been a rock star, but teaching music to people far exceeds that experience because transferring the gift, nurturing the gift of music within someone, is beyond rewarding. I am spreading the "gospel" of musical performance and appreciation in a way that will live well beyond my lifetime, in and through everyone I have taught. And they will become teachers, some of them, and keep the gift, the joy, going and growing in the lives of a new generation. What more could one ask for as a legacy than that?
