Over twenty years of playing all my taught instruments has shown me there is not one specific way to teach music to every person, so I change my curriculum for every student and completely customize what you learn to how you learn, and what you're interested in! I started teaching music lessons in after school programs when I was eleven and fell totally in love. I continued to do this for many years driving to neighboring towns, volunteering at church youth groups and local Boys and Girls Club all around my hometown.  In Portland I've been gigging, playing on records, recording music for films, and volunteering every week at Nonprofit Mu ... I'm passionate about seeing my students get results. The joy of making progress towards ones musical goals is exciting for the student and for the teacher, and the positive energy created spills into many other areas of life.  My lessons focus on building a solid foundation in technique, harmony & theory and vocabulary. Once we determine what the students goals are I create a plan customized for each student that is fun, challenging and effective. I've been teaching for over 15 years in music stores and private studios in California and Washington state. Several of my students have gone on to play in bands and tour. Some have even be ... I cater to what my student's interests are and am happy to take suggestions for material they'd like to learn in lessons. At the same time, I feel it's my responsibility to draw from my background as a music professional and show the student material they may ... View Profile

Along with standard approaches, my lessons have a special focus on the psychology and science of music. Music making is about how the human mind processes things like rhythm and harmony, the way we form patterns and expectations, and the way emotions and social associations affect our experiences. I also emphasize creative exploration. I have a classical guitar degree and experience with lots of other styles. I spent a couple years in a full-time pop/rock/jam band. I've reviewed over 800 books on guitar and music education and known many other teachers, so I know what's out there otherwise. My broad perspective lets me adapt lessons for each ... View Profile

I believe that playing music is possibly the most fun activity a person can engage in, and learning how to improve at an instrument is a valuable experience that crosses over to many aspects of one’s life, as well as being really exciting and rewarding. I have been playing guitar for over 10 years, and teaching almost as long. In California, I taught at the Santa Barbara Academy of Rock, Jensen’s Mainstage Summer Camp, The LOUD Program, Goleta Valley Jr. High, as well as many private lessons. Since moving to Portland in 2014, I have had many private students. I enjoy playing guitar in a wide variety of scenarios, from ro ... View Profile

My teaching approach: I take a very personal approach with each individual student. First and foremost, I talk to them about their goals and what they want from playing guitar, or musically in general. Then, I develop a lesson plan based on what their goals and desires are. With each lesson, I give the student the opportunity to choose if they'd like to review a past lesson or lessons, or if they'd prefer to move on to new material. I've found this approach really helps students absorb material easier and tend to feel less overwhelmed. This approach also gives students direct control over their own progression. My influences are: Mostly what ... View Profile

Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.

Portland Guitar Instruction

Geoff Arnold · Portland, OR

What or who inspired you to start teaching?

My name is Geoff Arnold, and I come from a musical family and began learning with formal classical piano lessons from a renown concert pianist. Within a couple years, I began playing drums, and then guitar and bass, all of which I continue to play, and teach, to this day.

I began teaching, initially as a way to earn money during down time between tours in my musical career. It soon came to me that I am good at sharing information, in part because I had been playing music nearly my whole life, and understand the "language" of music very well, like a second native spoken language.

What do you love most about your job?

The thing I love most about teaching music, it is not a "job" to me, it is a calling, is helping people learn an appreciation for music they can't have simply listening to it. Now they begin to understand what is going on in the songs they hear, and even come to recognize what the instruments are doing musically, theoretically, on some level. How amazing is that?

And since schools are cutting musical education programs, it is even more important people such as myself are out there to inspire a love for listening to and playing music.

What types of students have you worked with?

The kind of students I work with has ranged from the young (6 years old is the youngest I'll teach, and only for piano; all other instruments I start at 8-10 years) on up to retired people seeking to remain active in their later years. And nothing keeps the mind engaged more than playing music!

Tell us about your passion for teaching

I live and breathe music, and have played music for over 53 years, since I was eight years old. It has never been out of my life since starting the journey. I play every day, I learn every day (and even learn from my students, too!), and I grow better and better in playing and writing music. I will continue to write, perform and teach for the remainder of my years on earth, all to bring just one more person into the world of creating music!

What advice would you give aspiring students?

For anyone who wishes to learn to play music, you have to understand it is a commitment. You won't sound great on day One... or Two. Above all, I am honest with my students. But one day you will wake up, start playing your instrument and it will be magical. This can take as little as three months, and when it happens, you'll be hooked for life. So you have to hang on and keep practicing and learning until that moment. It will be worth every minute because you'll understand in that magical moment what music really is all about. No words can describe it. It's just amazing!

I hope that gives you a good overview of my passion, my love and my devotion to music. I've been a rock star, but teaching music to people far exceeds that experience because transferring the gift, nurturing the gift of music within someone, is beyond rewarding. I am spreading the "gospel" of musical performance and appreciation in a way that will live well beyond my lifetime, in and through everyone I have taught. And they will become teachers, some of them, and keep the gift, the joy, going and growing in the lives of a new generation. What more could one ask for as a legacy than that?

Thanks!

--Geoff
