The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.

Reviews for Allentown piano teachers

Louis D.
I’ve been taking lessons with Anthony for about 6 months now, and my guitar playing has definitely improved. Some lessons we have deep discussions on music theory concepts, other lessons we’ve worked on songs and used them as blueprints to learn different techniques or chords or what have you. For example, recently we’ve been working on “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas, and within a month I’ve gone from never fingerpicking an acoustic to playing the song with a degree of efficiency. Genre-wise, we’ve worked on everything from Megadeth to Louis Armstrong, so he’s definitely versatile. He’s also helped me with writing my own material, and has a great recording setup. His prices are fair, and his schedule is usually pretty flexible if I can’t make a lesson one week he finds time for me. Whether you want to sight read music or play some songs around the campfire or shred like Van Halen, he’s your guy.
