Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Instruct the new student in the etiquette and proceedures of the Dojo. Explain the process and the training involved toward the first promotion.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have 48 years of experience in one karate system, Shorin-Ryu. Retired Correction Officer and Self Defense instructor for the Department. Instructed many Law Enforcement Officers.
Also, many young students have enlisted into the Military and also became Police officers, State Police and Federal Agents.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I have affordable monthly tuitions and family plans.
How did you get started teaching?
First I instruct the new student on Dojo Etiquette and Rules. Then I proceed in the Basic Drills necessary for the first promotion. Promotions are not automatic. The student be be proficient in the 40 basic drill and kata required for the first testing.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have successfully worked with students with A.D.D. and other disabilities.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I will be 70 years old in August. At a recent karate tournament I took 2 first place awards in the 60 and older division. I was the oldest in that division.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Shop around and be sure you don't sign on the dotted line by a fast talking and high pressure sales pitch. Observe a class. If they spend a lot of time doing jumping jacks and other gym exercises, walk out. You want to learn and train in Karate, be sure the school's classes conduct only karate training. Not acrobatics and gynmastics.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Ask about the school's lineage. How long the teacher has been teaching. If the teacher has a Black Belt in several styles then he is too busy chasing styles instead of perfecting the system he began in.
