Aileen B. says, "Kendrick has been giving my nephew his first photography lessons. He is very knowledgable and works very well with him. My nephew enjoys his time with Kendrick and feels he is learning a lot. Kendrick spent extra time with him when they had their first lesson in person. (Kendrick had three sessions with him via Facetime.). He gives extra also in allowing my nephew to send pictures he has taken at car shows or at football games to get Kendricks opinion on how well he is doing. Kendrick is also very personable and becomes a quick friend. I recommend Kendrick with five stars." Read more

Matt S. says, "Joel is such a positive and patient teacher. I am a low level player and Joel patterned our lessons with my goals in mind but he also provided on point instruction for all areas I need to improve in. Joel was also professional, on time, and quick to respond to questions. We had great virtual sessions and Joel always provided great practice resources in between lessons which always kept me playing until the next lesson. I would highly recommend Joel!" Read more

Karl R. says, "I have been taking guitar lessons with Ryan at Supertonic Guitar for about four months and I can say that my guitar playing and understanding has improved more than I thought possible. I took lessons many years ago and was frustrated that my instructor was teaching me stuff I didn't care to learn. They didn't have a real plan and they were showing me what they wanted to play, not what I wanted and as a result I lost interest. I really didn't know what to practice or even how to practice and as a result I stopped playing. Fast forward to over 20 years later and lessons at Supertonic Guitar. I have learned more about the guitar, how to play it, and music theory in the past four months than in all the previous years of lessons I've had. Ryan has taken the kind of music I enjoy and want to learn into his lesson plan for me and it makes it so much more fun to learn. It motivates me to play and I come out of just about every lesson with new knowledge and I am eager to apply it and practice it. In the past, I would play a couple times a week when I felt like it; now I look forward to picking up my guitar and practicing every day and as a result I get better and am closer to accomplishing my goals as a guitar player. The jam nights that Ryan organizes are awesome and so much fun. I learn a great deal by playing with other guitarists of different levels from beginner to very experienced. I highly recommend Ryan and Supertonic Guitar if you have any interest at all in learning guitar. He will help you to improve and learn in a way that will make it fun and challenging." Read more

Your Guitar Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do guitar lessons cost near me?

Guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per lesson, depending on if they last 30 minutes or up to 1 hour. If it's a one-on-one lesson, it'll cost around $45 to $70 hourly. Learning guitar in a group is cheaper at $25 to $35 per session.

If you're taking lessons every month, it adds up to $170 to $315 with the typical prepaid discount.

Are guitar lessons worth it?

Guitar lessons are worth it since only a professional teacher giving you live feedback can guide you to learn faster. A good instructor helps you understand your mistakes and prevents you from developing bad habits.

Learning guitar by yourself takes a lot longer and won't prepare you as well to play in public.

At what age should I start guitar lessons?

Children can start guitar lessons from the ages of 6 to 10, or when they can comfortably hold the guitar and press the strings. Adults can start guitar lessons at any age, provided they practice regularly and patiently.

How many guitar lessons do I need?

The number of guitar lessons you need varies according to your goal and your practice routine. For many people, it typically takes about 2 to 6 months to play a simple tune. Mastering the guitar like a professional can take anywhere from 4 to 10 years.

What do you learn in guitar lessons?

In most guitar lessons, you can expect to learn:

  • How to correctly position your fingers to play chords
  • How to tune your guitar
  • How to play various scales
  • New techniques for plucking and strumming
  • How to read sheet music.

Are online guitar lessons good?

Online guitar lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour and are good for getting personal instruction from skilled teachers worldwide. Take advantage of flexible scheduling and immediate feedback while learning new guitar-playing styles. Plus, you can easily record lessons to review their advice later.

How do I find the best guitar lessons near me?

In order to find the best guitar lessons for you, look through nearby teachers listed here on the Lessons website. You can also ask for teachers at local music stores or community colleges.

Before you hire a guitar teacher, make sure to:

  • Check out prices from at least 3 different teachers.
  • Read their reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Ask for a list of their current or previous students that you can talk to.
  • Talk to other parents about the teacher's reputation with their children.
  • Make sure you get a written agreement and schedule before your first lesson.
  • Avoid making a big payment upfront for a month of lessons until you're comfortable with the teacher.

What questions do I ask when choosing a guitar teacher?

To find the right guitar teacher, you can ask them these questions:

  • What kind of music degree do you have?
  • How many years of experience do you have in teaching guitar?
  • Can I have a free trial lesson to see if your teaching style helps me?
  • What is the average age of your students?
  • Will you assign me finger exercises as homework?
  • How often should I practice between lessons?
  • What textbooks do I need, and where can I buy used ones?
  • How many guitar-playing styles are you an expert in?
  • Can you modify your teaching style to suit my learning abilities?
  • What should I bring to our lessons, and how long is each one?
  • Can I get a copy of our schedule, agreement, and payment terms?
  • What is your policy if I have to cancel a class due to an emergency?
  • Can I choose some of my favorite songs to learn on the guitar?

I have played the acoustic guitar for many years. Kendrick has challenged me to play new sounds, and I am currently expanding my guitar vocabulary. If you are looking to amp up your guitar (or piano/ keyboard) musical skills, Kendrick has a wealth of knowledge and skill. He is able to teach the theory of music well and plays with much soul and knowledge combined. Highly recommended.

I had a great time learning from Cole. Cole's down to earth nature and deep musical understanding made me feel comfortable and encouraged on my own path learning the guitar. I really appreciated Cole's emphasis on creativity and openness as a mindset, even while we were working steadily and calmly on fundamentals. Thank you Cole, for opening up the world of playing music to me.

Both my sons take drum lessons from Lael. He was recommended to us by a local music teacher. They absolutely love it. They have learned so much and look forward to their lesson each week. Lael makes it fun and engaging. I can’t say enough good things about what he gives to the experience of learning. I would highly recommend him.

Joel is an amazing guitar instructor. After the first lesson, he will determine your skill level. Once he learns your music goals, he will craft an instructional program to meet those goals which is challenging enough to keep you interested, but within your skill set to not discourage. Joel is by far the best instructor I have ever had.

I've been a student for a few years now and my guitar playing has improved tremendously. Before lessons, I touched my guitar once in a blue moon. Now I get restless if I go a few days without playing. I have learned a lot about the fretboard and music theory, which has given me the confidence to not only learn more songs, but try things beyond what's written in the tabs, as well as learn songs by ear and try out improvising and soloing. It's clear that Ryan is passionate about teaching guitar, and I appreciate that he encourages me to step out of my comfort zone. I recommend taking lessons if you want to hold yourself accountable and gain a deeper understanding of guitar.

I am a cellist, and Jon and I collaborated many times for wedding gigs and other musical events, such as at private parties and art galleries. I always enjoyed working with Jon and coming up with creative arrangements together for everything from classical pieces to Beatles covers. Jon is a fun and easygoing person to create music with, and he is a versatile musician who can play lots of different styles, from "The Swan" to "Michelle." Definitely one of the most rewarding musical collaborations I've ever had the opportunity to be part of -- Thanks again, Jon!
