Reese P. says, "Erik was my guitar teacher growing up and through high school and taught music in such a fun and effective way. I remember he would always start the lessons off by asking what I wanted to learn and would somehow find ways to connect important elements of theory into whatever I wanted to learn that day. I am about to graduate Berklee College of Music and would have never even gotten in if it weren't for Erik! Absolutely the best guitar teacher out there." Read more

I love helping new songwriters get started, and good songwriters get better - same with guitarists! I've been at it for quite a while (and have won some awards along the way), and I continue to learn and grow my skill sets as well, so I know it can be challenging, and I know how much the help of a mentor can be!

Aileen B. says, "Kendrick has been giving my nephew his first photography lessons. He is very knowledgable and works very well with him. My nephew enjoys his time with Kendrick and feels he is learning a lot. Kendrick spent extra time with him when they had their first lesson in person. (Kendrick had three sessions with him via Facetime.). He gives extra also in allowing my nephew to send pictures he has taken at car shows or at football games to get Kendricks opinion on how well he is doing. Kendrick is also very personable and becomes a quick friend. I recommend Kendrick with five stars." Read more

Your Guitar Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do guitar lessons cost near me?

Guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per lesson, depending on if they last 30 minutes or up to 1 hour. If it's a one-on-one lesson, it'll cost around $45 to $70 hourly. Learning guitar in a group is cheaper at $25 to $35 per session.

If you're taking lessons every month, it adds up to $170 to $315 with the typical prepaid discount.

Are guitar lessons worth it?

Guitar lessons are worth it since only a professional teacher giving you live feedback can guide you to learn faster. A good instructor helps you understand your mistakes and prevents you from developing bad habits.

Learning guitar by yourself takes a lot longer and won't prepare you as well to play in public.

At what age should I start guitar lessons?

Children can start guitar lessons from the ages of 6 to 10, or when they can comfortably hold the guitar and press the strings. Adults can start guitar lessons at any age, provided they practice regularly and patiently.

How many guitar lessons do I need?

The number of guitar lessons you need varies according to your goal and your practice routine. For many people, it typically takes about 2 to 6 months to play a simple tune. Mastering the guitar like a professional can take anywhere from 4 to 10 years.

What do you learn in guitar lessons?

In most guitar lessons, you can expect to learn:

  • How to correctly position your fingers to play chords
  • How to tune your guitar
  • How to play various scales
  • New techniques for plucking and strumming
  • How to read sheet music.

Are online guitar lessons good?

Online guitar lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour and are good for getting personal instruction from skilled teachers worldwide. Take advantage of flexible scheduling and immediate feedback while learning new guitar-playing styles. Plus, you can easily record lessons to review their advice later.

How do I find the best guitar lessons near me?

In order to find the best guitar lessons for you, look through nearby teachers listed here on the Lessons website. You can also ask for teachers at local music stores or community colleges.

Before you hire a guitar teacher, make sure to:

  • Check out prices from at least 3 different teachers.
  • Read their reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Ask for a list of their current or previous students that you can talk to.
  • Talk to other parents about the teacher's reputation with their children.
  • Make sure you get a written agreement and schedule before your first lesson.
  • Avoid making a big payment upfront for a month of lessons until you're comfortable with the teacher.

What questions do I ask when choosing a guitar teacher?

To find the right guitar teacher, you can ask them these questions:

  • What kind of music degree do you have?
  • How many years of experience do you have in teaching guitar?
  • Can I have a free trial lesson to see if your teaching style helps me?
  • What is the average age of your students?
  • Will you assign me finger exercises as homework?
  • How often should I practice between lessons?
  • What textbooks do I need, and where can I buy used ones?
  • How many guitar-playing styles are you an expert in?
  • Can you modify your teaching style to suit my learning abilities?
  • What should I bring to our lessons, and how long is each one?
  • Can I get a copy of our schedule, agreement, and payment terms?
  • What is your policy if I have to cancel a class due to an emergency?
  • Can I choose some of my favorite songs to learn on the guitar?

I am an older middle-aged individual who recently took an interest in wanting to learn how to play a guitar. Attempting to learn on my own at my age is very limiting. However, finding an instructor who understands age as it relates to effective learning is also very challenging. Fortunately I was referred to Erik. He not only has decades of guitar playing and teaching experience, but he understands how to assess a student's learning ability and subsequently build a teaching methodology geared for that student. In other words, he uses a "student first" approach: listen to and understand what the student's particular guitar interests and abilities are. Then he'll use his own skills and knowledge to "shape" the student's guitar skills based on what the student is most interested in. Erik is very patient and has a great sense of humor. Both qualities are a must for my limited skill level. He provides the appropriate amount of the music theory to help me better understand the music that I'm attempting to play. To sum it up, whether you are a beginner, intermediate or more advanced, Erik can work with you to refine your guitar playing skills. At the very least, give him a call to discuss your particular guitar playing situation. -Steve

I have played the acoustic guitar for many years. Kendrick has challenged me to play new sounds, and I am currently expanding my guitar vocabulary. If you are looking to amp up your guitar (or piano/ keyboard) musical skills, Kendrick has a wealth of knowledge and skill. He is able to teach the theory of music well and plays with much soul and knowledge combined. Highly recommended.

Adam is incredible! I would highly suggest taking lessons from him. He not only teaches guitar, but understand the importance of the understanding of music theory to go along with the knowledge of the fretboard and how the two intertwine. Taking lessons with Adam is a great experience for anyone wanting to learn or just hone the skills they already have and take them to the next level.

I am 80 years old. In my life’s journey I have met a few people who stand out as exceptional, in my opinion, and among them at the top of the list is Derwin Hinson. Throughout the first 75 years came my education, meeting my wife, the birth of my children and of course work. During this time I spent all of my spare time that I could afford hunting or fishing all over the U.S., Mexico, Costa Rico, Panama, Caribbean and Hawaii Then in my seventies my legs wore out and I needed to replace my knees which did not turn out great, then I broke my femur and got arthritis in my feet. In 2014 I was fishing in Florida with a friend of mine and he said to me, John when you get home you need to sell your boat. I realized that he was right and sold my boat. That is when God put Derwin Hinson in my life. He was working to help this praise band from our church get started and I had the opportunity the sing with them, I believe at that time I was 76 years old. After a few months I thought well it might be nice to try and play the guitar. In all my life I have had not one bit of musical training or talent. In January of 2015 I bought a guitar and started taking lessons from Derwin. This has gone so well that I don’t even think about fishing or hunting. I have gotten to the point to where I can pick and play a few tunes. His patience is so amazing, I don’t understand how a man with his talent can listen and play with a smile on his face while his students fumble through the chords. All I know now is that I have a hobby and something to do until I am an old man. I thank God for bringing Derwin into my life and I know that most of his students feel the same Thanks Forever
