About

I have a passion for customized and in depth instruction to find the 'thing' that lights your fire for music.

With each student my goal is to build a report that is comfortable and focused. I take the time to build a foundation in good technical studies as well as equal focus on learning to make good, musical choices as a performer and instrumentalist.

I have more than 5 years experience as a private music instructor and over 10 years experience as a sideman and recording artist working in genres from acoustic and contemporary Jazz to bluegrass, country western, rock, and soul.

I am from Columbus, OH where I graduated from The Ohio State University. I taught as a private instructor with several schools with students from ages 10-18 as well as out of a studio teaching students as young as ten years old to students in their fifties.

I am new to Nashville where I work as a sideman and instrumentalist in a number of musical settings.

I have played the upright bass since age fourteen and studied with renowned jazz bassists such as Jay Leonhart, Martin Wind, George DeLancey, Andy Woodson, and Dr. Paul Robinson.

Reach out and we will get you playing like you've always wanted to!

John is flexible and moves at the students pace. He provides theory instruction as well as technique. He helped my daughter go from moderate experience to a proficient high school bassist.

    Frequently asked questions

I will ask the student some questions to try to understand their history with music/the instrument/what they listen to and hope to achieve through private study. With those goals in mind I like to start with scale studies and technical studies before moving on to particular repertoire so that the student and I have a common language and foundation before tackling their goals.

Four years of collegiate study of Classical and Jazz Studies with study of theory, conducting, jazz theory, composition, small and large ensemble arranging as well as more than five years real world experience as a sideman with national and international touring experience.
