Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I would typically ask them to observe one or two classes before they decide to participate. Then just like every thing else someone would learn, we start with the basics. Must build a strong foundation, or the rest will not work.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Since the age of 8, I have trained in American Karate, Tae Kwon Do and Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate. Currently I hold a 4th degree black belt in Shorei Kan Karate-Do with Goju Shorei Mesias Karate-Do and a 2nd degree black belt with the International Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate-Do Federation.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I am pretty flexible with the pricing. Making money is not my goal. It is to spread the passion I have for the art to others. My only request is students pay for their own equipment and purchase their own belts when promoted.
How did you get started teaching?
While training in Shorei Kan Karate, my sensei joined the U.S. Army and left me to teach his class while he was gone. I was at the time only a purple belt. The rest is history.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with children from age 4 to adults that were into their 70's.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
We were new to the IOGKF, and we were given the honor to host the national black belt event in San Antonio. Not long after that, Master Morio Higaonna from Okinawa gave us a surprise visit. Was such an honor.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure you find somethat that not only can teach you how to do something, but also the why you do things a particular way. Also they should be well studied on the history and lineage of their style.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
This is such a broad question. The student needs to ask themselves before they talk with a potential Sensei is, why do I want to learn Karate; Fitness? Self Defense? Sport, to compete? Then ask the instructor if they can meet their goal.
