FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Meet at the pool/phone and review goals, abilities and schedules. Get in the WATER and see what you can and not ready to do.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am currently the Coordinator for Aquatics at the University of Texas at Austin, Owner/ Teacher for AquaKnow Aquatics Swimming & Water Safety Instruction, American Red Cross Volunteer and Instructor Trainer in Water Safety, CPR AED and Lifeguard Instructor, USA Swimming & Diving Coach, Naui/ Padi Dive Master and Special Olympics advisor and Instructor. I have been teaching and coaching in the water for more than 30 years and still LOVE getting wet!

How did you get started teaching?

Grew up in Florida not knowing how to swim. Learned the hard way. Saw a need with people I knew.

Realized an extreme need for Special Needs Instruction so enjoy that level.

Had a good time getting them into the water and played around with different games (skills) and they got the hang of the skills (learnning to swim).

I also work with the latest Olympians, so I am up on the current trends leading into the Games in Tokyo this Summer 2020!

What types of students have you worked with?

Infants-Adults, Non-swimmers-Olympic Gold Medalists, Recovering Drowning Victims, Parents of all of the above, Aquatic Physical Therapist, Foster Parents, Scouts of America, COA Aquatics, YMCA Aquatics, Military cadets and more.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

Getting a $5.00 gift card to SONIC for a Strawberry Lime-Aide from an adult non-swimmer student that took a University swim class multiple times for 2 years and with 100 of hours of practice learned how to jump into deep water, tread, survival float, swim 25 yards and then got out of the water and shook my hand!!!

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

State your goals and listen.

Ask questions more questions.

Ask to watch a class of interest to your needs.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
