As a professional performer, teacher and master teacher with a Master's degree from Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor's degree from California State University, Chico, I have performed with orchestras, chambers groups and choirs throughout the United States and Europe.

Comfortable in both classical and musical theater genres, my knowledge of vocal production and the musical skills needed to succeed in music make me an excellent teacher. I pride myself in having a great ear and instinctual understanding of each student's individual instructional needs.

Before relocating to Houston, I owned and operated a successful full-time private teaching studio in the Atlanta area with students succeeding in All-State Chorus, the Governor's Honors Program, college auditions, local competitions, community theater, and school chorus auditions. As a successful soloist and vocal instructor, I pride myself in teaching proper technique, nurturing each student's vocal development, helping singers develop a true love of music, and gaining an appreciation of their unique vocal gifts.

With a creative and personable teaching style, I am able to connect with each student where they need to be met. My students of all ages see an immediate improvement when applying the techniques that I share with them. Focusing on healthy vocal production, good breath support, and proper techniques of support and vowel placement, I am able to help students reach their musical goals through vocal exercises and drills, direct application to selected music, and assigned home practice between lessons. After learning the basics of vocal production, we can further focus on interpretive elements of the songs and students will feel the rewards of making beautiful music with their own free and unique sound.

I enjoy the process of watching singers grow and improve. It is fulfilling to give my students the proper tools and techniques to help them to develop their instruments to their full potential. I can get chills when a student beautifully expresses a song or phrase. I love to witness the excitement in my students when they have an "aha" moment. It's wonderful when they feel the joy of making lovely music and use their voices freely and expressively.

Taking voice lessons with Holly was my favorite extracurricular activity growing up. She is extremely warm, loving, and passionate. She meets students where they are and is GOOD at what she does. I noticed a difference in my singing after just the first lesson with her. But beyond being extremely knowledgeable at vocal pedagogy, she was a teacher I had a lasting relationship with. She fostered my love of classical music and helped me explore other genres including broadway and pop. Whether you are looking for someone to help you prepare for a specific audition or opportunity or someone who can help you grow as a person and a musician--Holly is worth meeting.

Both of my daughters had lessons with Holly when they were in high school and we loved her as a teacher. It was wonderful to see that she really worked with each of my girls differently, according to their musical preferences and their different strengths. My girls wont stop getting complements on their singing since theyve worked with Holly, and their talent has improved a lot. She is truly missed in Atlanta and Houston is lucky to have her.

Holly was my voice teacher for 5 years back in Atlanta, and working with her was an amazing experience. She was extremely professional, helpful, and instructed me in a way that I really felt like she tailored the class around me and pushed my abilities to new heights. She was also such a warm person and I always felt welcomed by her and her family.

    Frequently asked questions

I recommend new students take a trial lesson to be sure that we are a good fit. In the first lesson, we address basic technique, talk about the student's goals, work through vocal exercises, and design a lesson plan that works for them. Students typically bring a song or two they have been working on and sing it for me. We are often able to apply new techniques to the music that very lesson. Students typically see immediate results with just a few tools, tips and tricks offered in this first lesson!

I began teaching at a private music school and soon became involved in higher education as an adjunct faculty member. I have also been involved in education in music ministry working with children and youth choirs. I enjoy teaching private lessons and began building my own private studio in 2006.

I have taught students of various ages, musical styles and technical levels. I teach both classical and musical theater vocal style, as well as basic piano. Some of my students sing in their school chorus and participate in All-State Chorus each year. Other students sing in local musical theater groups and successfully audition for their school shows. Some students participate in musical opportunities at their churches. My beginning piano students are typically first time players learning the basics of keyboard, note reading, and music theory.

Some of my high school students earned music scholarships to pursue vocal performance at universities. I am always proud of my students who successfully audition for roles in community and their school musicals.

A student of mine, who began studying with me at the end of her 8th grade year, just graduated from college in Vocal Performance and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. She sang her senior recital and invited me to attend. Makes my heart proud.

One size does not fit all. Look for a teacher that is willing to help you understand the mechanics of voice and give you technical information in a way that you need to hear it. A teacher should be able to assess your needs, which are individual to you. You will be able to feel and hear improvement quickly with a good teacher!

Why do you want to take lessons? What are your musical goals? What kinds of singing opportunities do you participate in currently? Do you have goals in mind like planning to audition for your school musical or make All-State Chorus? This will give your teacher an idea of what kinds of music you like and what you hope to accomplish in your lessons.
