With over two decades immersed in boxing and fitness, my journey has been a blend of athletic achievement, rigorous training, and a passion for coaching and developing fighters. My career began with six years of amateur boxing competition, a time that allowed me to hone my skills in the ring while developing a deep understanding of technique, strategy, and the discipline required to excel. This foundation built the way for my transition into the professional boxing arena, where I competed for eight years, gaining a wealth of experience and insight into the demands of high-level competition. Throughout my years as a professional, I faced vari

I enjoy teaching beginner learners the art of what many people believe to be the most effective fighting style on the planet. Muay Thai allows you to use every limb and joint of your body to defend yourself at a distance or at close quarters of an attacker. There's no wonder why many athletes at the professional level have embraced this fighting style. It goes without saying that the people of Thailand have truly mastered the art of fighting and self defense. Shoot me a text if you're interested in learning the fundamentals of Muay Thai....

Billy T. says, " I recently attended a class with Mr. Gomez. His self-defense instruction is useless in real-life combat. He teaches his students to block a baseball bat with their bare arm. Sure, a person can do that but don’t expect your arm to be made out of steel. It would probably break. He also showed me some moves against a rear naked choke that I performed. He pinched my arm so hard that he left my arm with 3 big grey bruises. He also demonstrated a move by flicking the top of my head really hard. He is a horrible instructor and he will mandhandle you or your child to show his useless technique. Don’t go to this fake American academy. Just go to a real Tae Kwon Do school with a more traditional approach instead of this watered-down pseudo kickboxing/Tae Kwon Do/judo knock-off dojo." Read more

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do karate classes cost?

Karate classes cost $100 to $150+ per month on average. Prices depend on the class size, student's age, location, and number of classes per week included in the membership plan. In addition to the class fee, you'll have extra costs for uniforms, belts, and testing fees. A karate uniform—also called a Gi, karategi, or dogi—costs $60 to $120 on average, while belts cost $5 to $20. Some schools include a gi and belt with your first month's tuition. Testing fees vary by school, but beware of schools that charge more than $20 per test.

Where to find karate classes near me?

  • Look for a reputable dojo that focuses on karate rather than a mixed martial arts gym.
  • Research the instructors' competition record and reputation.
  • Read dojo and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the school offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the dojo in person to confirm it is clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free trial class to ensure the school is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the membership contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask karate schools before joining?

My boys have been taking karate for three years with Ray Gomez. This is a fantastic school with a very family feel. Excellent technical training and Mr. Gomez is so great with the kids. We previously took classes at another Dallas area school that was good, but the instructors were largely college and high school kids. Mr. Gomez personally teaches all of the classes with black belts training underneath him assisting in class time. The times are very convenient for training after school and in the early evening. I cannot speak highly enough about the technical skill being taught. This is not a belt factory at all. There are very high expectations for all students. Along with the karate skills being taught Mr. Gomez really stresses honor, respect, and self control. We also love the family feel of the school. The students all get to know each other as do the parents. Mr. and Mrs. Gomez are there every single time we come to class. I cannot speak highly enough of Ray's and Mr. and Mrs. Gomez!
