Daniel T. says, "Our philosophy and principals of self defense are in agreement. Due to some previously scheduled surgery I only just attended my first private lesson. The facility is excellent, the breadth of training available is ample, and the techniques concentrate on complementing the body's natural reaction to sudden threat stimulus and concentrate on gross motor skills rather than complex techniques. This approach reduces reaction time vis a vis Hicks law and the OODA loop. I look forward to my next session. These skills can be learned by all, regardless of age, infirmity, or prior skill sets." Sharmin P. says, "Michael Alban's self-defense seminar was an excellent resource for non-profit organization Eagles Empowered to Soar during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The training was comprehensive and addressed various forms of personal violence. Michael's delivery was engaging and informative, allowing attendees to grasp the seriousness of the issue while also offering practical techniques to defend themselves in dangerous situations. The training was also inclusive, promoting a safe environment for all participants, regardless of their gender, sexuality or ethnic background. Eagles Empowered to Soar urged Michael to conduct further sessions in the future as it was a valuable resource for their members who can now take the knowledge and techniques provided and incorporate them into their daily lives. Michael's seminar has had a positive impact on the members of the community and their overall awareness of personal violence. Overall, Michael Alban's self-defense seminar is recommended for all individuals looking to protect themselves and others from personal violence." Read more

Your jiu jitsu questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do jiu-jitsu classes cost?

The average cost of jiu-jitsu classes is $50 to $200 per month, depending on the class age range, number of classes per week, your commitment or contract length, and the instructor's expertise and reputation. Jiu-jitsu gyms and academies are more expensive if they have well-known instructors who are national champions on staff.

In addition to the monthly class or gym fee, you'll have extra costs for gis and belts. A jiu-jitsu gi costs $60 to $120 on average, while belts cost $15 to $30. Some gyms also charge a fee for belt promotion. However, this is frowned upon by reputable academies and is often considered a warning sign of a low-quality gym.

What is jiu-jitsu?

Jiu-jitsu is a self-defense martial art based on grappling and ground control, focusing on the skill of taking your opponent to the ground and wrestling for a dominant position. jiu-jitsu uses the principles of leverage, pressure, grip, timing, and angles to subdue your opponent.

Jiu-Jitsu classes provide:

  • Self-defense skills
  • A fun and exciting way to improve your fitness
  • Increased focus and concentration

Where did jiu-jitsu originate?

Japanese martial arts expert Mitsuyo Maeda was the first to bring grappling and groundwork-focused jiu-do demonstrations to other countries. In 1914, Carlos Gracie became one of Maeda's first Brazilian students. Carlos and his brother Hélio Gracie, along with fellow students Luis França and Oswaldo Fadda, later went on to develop Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Is jiu-jitsu a good workout?

Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent full-body workout that improves strength, flexibility, conditioning, and endurance.

Is jiu-jitsu good for self-defense?

Jiu-jitsu is a highly effective self-defense martial art. Jiu-jitsu teaches you how to control a stronger and larger opponent, allowing smaller or weaker individuals to defend themselves and increasing their ability to escape dangerous confrontations.

Is jiu-jitsu dangerous?

Though jiu-jitsu is a contact sport, when practiced with proper technique and form it is safer than many other martial arts because it doesn't focus on striking your opponent with punches and kicks. In statewide competitions, jiu-jitsu resulted in fewer injuries than judo, Taekwondo, mixed martial arts, or traditional wrestling.

Is jiu-jitsu good for kids?

Jiu-jitsu can be extremely beneficial for kids, helping them to:

  • Build confidence and self-esteem
  • Improve discipline and focus
  • Increase strength and resilience
  • Develop respect for themselves and others
  • Foster new friendships
  • Improve coordination and body awareness

Where can I find the best jiu-jitsu classes near me?

Follow these tips to find jiu-jitsu academies and gyms near you:

  • Look for a reputable academy that focuses on jiu-jitsu rather than a mixed martial arts gym.
  • Research the instructors' competition record and reputation.
  • Read academy and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the academy offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the academy in person to confirm it is clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free day or week-long trial membership to ensure the school is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask jiu-jitsu academies?

When researching new jiu-jitsu academies, be sure to ask these questions:

  • Is the gym beginner friendly?
  • What kind of contracts do you offer?
  • Do you offer a free trial class?
  • What is your class schedule?
  • How many students do you have?
  • How many students are in a typical class?
  • What is the instructor's lineage and competition record?
  • What kind of uniform is required? Do you offer no-gi classes?
  • Do your students and instructors compete regularly?
  • Do you charge for belt promotions?
  • How often do you clean your mats?

Both my husband & I started Self Defense lessons with Coach Justin; from the moment I walked in I felt comfortable around him. In the first lesson I went home feeling so much better. He is able to fit in a ton of information in one hour. He teaches you real life situations. We're very pleased with everything he has offered us & has taught us. I wouldn't chose a different instructor even if I could. I can't wait to see how far both my husband & I can go. Thank you Coach Justin for teaching us & continuing to teach us.

My boys have been taking karate for three years with Ray Gomez. This is a fantastic school with a very family feel. Excellent technical training and Mr. Gomez is so great with the kids. We previously took classes at another Dallas area school that was good, but the instructors were largely college and high school kids. Mr. Gomez personally teaches all of the classes with black belts training underneath him assisting in class time. The times are very convenient for training after school and in the early evening. I cannot speak highly enough about the technical skill being taught. This is not a belt factory at all. There are very high expectations for all students. Along with the karate skills being taught Mr. Gomez really stresses honor, respect, and self control. We also love the family feel of the school. The students all get to know each other as do the parents. Mr. and Mrs. Gomez are there every single time we come to class. I cannot speak highly enough of Ray's and Mr. and Mrs. Gomez!
