Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to talk with my new students to get an idea of where they are on their skill path and where they would like to be. Then I create a lesson plan that works for their skill set and desire.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a drummer my entire life. I live drums! I currently play areound the state of Texas with The Ryan Ross Band. We are set to release a new album next month. We are performing to promote the new material. I have worked in several studios as a hired musician. In high school I was the Drum Core Captain and the drummer for our Jazz Ensamble. I was the First chair Tempani player in my UIL group as well.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I typically charge $50 per hour. I also have special deals for students who really dig what I have to offer and are willing to purchase lessons by the month or in multiple lesson packages. Our first interactions are no charge. I need to know that the relationship is going to work before we talk money.
How did you get started teaching?
I had an amazing drum teacher. He and my father both inspired me to teach others.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with beginners and intermediate players mainly. I prefer to work with teens in a school program or local band and adults who have disccovered a passion for drumming.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
One of my past students recently contacted me. I had not heard from her in several years. She told me she was still playing in a band and thanked me for all I had done to get her to the next level in her playing. Unexpected words of encouragemnent from a past student/friend is always nice.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure to hook up with a teacher thet is interested in you and your desires. Don't get stuck with a teacher that has an ego problem.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Part of growing as a musician is honest self evaluation. Make sure you know where ou are with your skill set. You should also have a clear idea of what you wnat out of the lessons.
