Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I ask questions about the student’s musical background and experience (if any). Then, depending on age and experience, I determine which method book I will teach out of. As of Fall 2018, I currently have students as young as 8 and as old as 50.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I majored in Music at Sam Houston State University and University of Houston, have played in and toured with bands since the early 70s, and have played drums on more than 10 albums, including GRAMMY-Nominated works.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$40 for a 30 minute lesson, $60 for one hour
How did you get started teaching?
I was trained as a teacher in college, and have taught as a substitute school teacher before embarking on a band touring and recording career. In recent years, I have decided to “give back” a little and go into private teaching.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all kinds of students, from young beginners all the way to professional adults that were looking to improve their technique.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My band Oz Knozz released our third album, “True Believer”, in 2012, and it immediately went worldwide, getting on the air in as many as 17 countries! In the fall of 2012, “True Believer” was on the first round of GRAMMY nominations for as many as NINE awards in six categories!
In late 2016, I became an endorser for Phoenix Drum Company and I worked very closely with owner Philip Gelb, to design my new Custom-Made set of drums. I took delivery of them late in the summer of 2017, and they’re absolutely incredible!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Practice, practice, practice! And then practice some more!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What do you want to do with your drumming? Do you want to learn a few songs on the drums, or do you want to learn how to PLAY the drums, so you can then play ANY song?
