FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I prefer to utilize my client's time as efficiently as possible. So depending on the need, I formulate a plan that I feel will be the most effective and efficient use of our time together during the very first session. I also spend as much time as I feel is necessary analyzing how each client is able to best learn the material I will be teaching them so that I am able to tailor my tutoring to best fit each individual clients particular needs, strengths, and prefered style of learning.

Of course all of this is fairly different for all of my basketball and self-defense clients.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have my B.S. in Economics and Master's in Applied Behavioral Analysis. Prior to working as a tutor, I also had the privilige, along with the company director, of developing and implementing the first after school autism program for one of the largest companies that works with individuals on the Autism Spectrum in the state of Utah.

As far as basketball goes; I played from a young age and all through high school. I have run countless basketball camps begining back in my freshman year of high school.additionally I coach, and do a great deal of player development for the local high school program. Finally, I have an extremely lengthy and vast background in weightlifting, and sport specific fitness. I utilize this to help clients improve their game, particularly by increasing their vertical leap. Somwthong I have had tremendous success with.

As for self-defense; I have experience in almost every major fighting style that exists. I began with boxing at age 6, and have trained in more styles than I care to list. However, jiu-jitsu, Judo, Wrestling, Muay Thai, and Kickboxing are the styles I have spent the most time training in. Additionally, I have trained with and was a sparring partner with one of the most famous UFC fighters of all-time.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

My pricing varies greatly depending on both what I am tutoring, as well as how long and how often I will be working with a client.

How did you get started teaching?

I was asked by an aquantiance if I would be willing to help their company with some part time work as a tutor. I really enjoyed the work, and still do a great deal of work for that same company to this day.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with clients of all ages and abilities. Over the years I have worked with countless clients. Generally, a little over half of my clients are either in High School or College. However, I still work with a great deal of younger clients, particularly indivoduals with Autism and other developmental disabilities.

As far as basketball goes; I have worked with clients of all ages, however, the vast majority are either currently playong for their high school team, or are in middle school (or high school) preparing for tryouts.

As for self-defense, most of my clients are looking for 1 to 5 lessons, in order to better protect themselves, and feel more safe. The majority are women.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I always feel a great sense of pride and excitement when I am able to attend a client's college graduation ceremony.

Also, something that is not as life changing, but a big accomplishment nonetheless, is anytime a basketball client dunks for the first time, particularly if they were nowhere near close to being able to. It is always fun and exciting to see someone's reaction the first time they do.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

If you are willing to put forth effort, there is literally nothing I can't help you achieve. Also take advantage of every resource I have at my disposal. I can make school much, much, easier for you, as well as less expensive, and far less time consuming both in the short term as well as in the long run.

If you are looking to take your game to the next level, I feel my expierence both as a player and now as a coach/mentor has helped me to really gain an understanding of what is most important, and how best to improve those areas.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

What their goals are, and what areas they need the most help with.
