About
Hello! My name is Jessica Gu and I am a classical opera singer based in Annandale, VA. I am teaching online and in person voice lessons for all age ranges and for all levels of singing.
My calling is to merge the act of singing with mindfulness, allowing the mind, body, breath and soul to merge completely through the medium of the voice. Through my transformative journey as an opera singer, I’ve learned to deeply transmute and work through intense stage anxiety, and unravel chronic body tensions. Now, I feel a freedom of the voice, body and the soul that I could only dream of when I first started this journey. I would be honored to guide those who are interested in exploring the voice expression that is inextricably linked to the body and the mind through Zoom or in person lessons.
For Children- starting singing at a young age could be very helpful for their development in ear training, voice control, and building self-esteem. Singing can become a beautiful, fun medium for children to express themselves and explore the unlimited colors and facets of the voice. Singing can also greatly help with confidence and courage. Simple mindfulness exercises can be practiced during lessons to help with calming, regulating emotions, increased focus ability, and overall enjoyment and play through the voice.
For Adults-
Through the Body: We will work with somatic exercises to allow the body to release stored emotions and tensions. Deeply grounding in our body, and befriending and allowing the tensions to melt away, aiding the body to enter in optimal, easeful alignment.
Through the Mind: We will work through mindfulness exercises that assist in the act of singing, allowing singing to become a medium of deep enjoyment, deep peace, a safe haven of expression. Through these mindfulness exercises that can also be applied to everyday life, focus can be greatly improved in everyday tasks, and in turn, the quality of the everyday actions becomes amplified.
Through the Voice: For those who feel it is hard to express yourself, I feel you, I have walked a similar path. Your voice deserves to be heard, seen and felt. Your voice deserves to express all the different shades of colors, emotions and be truly free.
