My 3rd grader attends Arlington County public schools. The 3rd grade the classes go to the high school pools and do swim evaluations and have swim class for a week of their gym class. My daughter was so embarrassed last year -she could not swim and had to show her whole class that she was NOT able to even put her face underwater. She had so much anxiety that I reached out to Liz. After talking with Liz, she assured me she could get my daughter out of her anxiety if I could come once a week all winter. So we did just that. She is now very confident and can go under to pick up an object is 4ft of water and jump off the side into 7ft water and swim to the side. She is improving every day. This year her 4th grade class is attending the pool for a week as a class and she can’t wait!

Working with Liz was so easy. She arranged semi-private lessons for my kids & their cousins at our pool. Kids loved Liz, she is fun & funny and my littlest one learned her colors and to count last summer during her swim lessons with water games that stimulate imagination and learning. I didnt realize that swimming would affect my children with excitement since they were not a fan of water activities. But now i cant keep them out of the pool.

Just LOVED my swim lessons. As an adult I still didnt know how to swim at 50yrs old. Liz was so patient with my fear and anxiety that I was able to relax with her breathing techniques and exercises, learning to float and then move in the water. I have overcome my fear of the water and now i really enjoy swimming and getting the low stress exercises for my arthritis. I never thought I could learn to take my feet off the bottom of the pool, but the magic happens when you step out of your comfort zone.

Liz was patient with my stubborn 3 year old who was terrified of water (even a bath). Liz as a unique way of teaching that i was fascinated to watch unfold during this past winter. My 3yr old is now a happy kid and safe kid around water. Liz taught my child to jump into the water at any depth and swim to safety. I will be having a great summer as i wont be on the edge of my seat anymore. Thanks to the swim whisperer Liz!

My child just loved Liz as a swim teacher. She is fun and funny and always had my son laughing even tho I know he was afraid of going under water. He could not wait to go to his swim lesson every week. Now he is a different kid, with confidence and a love of swimming. He tries new things without hesitation and his whole life has changed for he is a happier child.

Liz is very Knowledgable and patient with her students. I was very nervous and she calmed me down on our first lesson. Being the adult and being embarrassed that I could not swim, Liz assured me that I would learn with just a few lessons, she was right! I am now a confident happy swimmer and not afraid to go to the beach anymore.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First I will ask parents or Adult student about past swimming experience.
Then schedule a swim lesson package in the appropriate pool or body of water and do an evaluation. This evaluation will give me an idea of where to start and any anxiety or fears will be recognized and this will help me come up with a curriculum for each student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been teaching for over 30 years. I have Red Cross Water safety Instructor WSI certification, Red Cross Lifeguard certification, CPR and AED certification.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I sell packages of lessons for progressive learning once a week or more for reserved spots in my schedule. Individual lessons may be purchased after the initial lesson package of 8 has been completed.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching as a lifeguard may years ago. I worked many summers and eventually got a full time aquatics director position at a high end health club directing the swim lesson program and running the pool and staff.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with many students of all ages from babies 6weeks old to adults as old as 89 yrs. From special needs students to junior olympic qualifiers I have worked with every age and every student has their journey. Come start yours or give the gift of swimming to your child today!
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
recently my student came early for a swim lesson. I was not at the pool and she go into the pool with no lifeguard on the stand. The staff came over and told her she had to take a swim test in the big deep pool before she could swim with out an adult in the water with her. Well the told her they didn't think she could pass the swim test of swimming across 25 meters and tread water for a minute. Not only did she pass with flying colors, but this was her last lesson before she was to try out for swim team. This successfully passing the test my this child's day and she could not stop smiling her whole swim lesson. Very impressive for a five year old!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Be honest about your child's past experience - if your child has fears of water or a near drowning experience then chose a teach who can work on rescue skills and safety first. If you or your child is more advanced make sure your communicate with the instructor your goals, concerns and ask questions. Parents and students need to build a trust in order to learn effectively
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Know your fears, and any anxiety you may have in and around water. Make a list of goals and talk to your teacher so they can give you a plan to work outside your lesson time so you improve and retain learned water skills.
