How did you get started teaching?
I have always loved teaching. Years ago after lifeguarding for years I started giving people swim tips and tricks to make the water more enjoyable for them. As an Aquatic director, I ran many swim programs for swim clubs. Specializing is self-rescue skills for the very young many children are safer in their backyard and community pools. Teaching adults to be more efficient swimmers with better balance and using less effort to swim faster and farther in any type of water has given triathletes a big advantage in the swimming leg of their events.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with many children and adults who have not done well in group class situations. I have taught students with challenges with hearing, listening, and physical skills. My students range from 7 weeks old to 99 years and all levels of swimming, from fearful of being in the water to students who have qualified for the Junior Olympics. Adults I have taught from non-swimmers to triathlete champions.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recently, I worked with twins at their home where they had a backyard pool. Parents were impressed when one day I threw their kids into the pool fully clothed as a surprise to see if they had learned their self-rescue skills.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a teacher who your child can relate to and can trust. You should try a small group of no more than 4 children but if you find learning is too slow or want to get a jump start, find a private instructor who can teach in a positive an calm manner and progress your child at a comfortable level for your individual child. Adults should consider someone who is patient and can analyze your current swim style and evolve to an efficient technique conserving energy.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Make sure you are honest with the teacher up front. If you know your child has a challenge or a bad past swimming experience, tell the instructor upfront. A good instructor will take on a challenge since there are different ways to teach depending on your child as an individual. Not being up front is unfair to your child and the instructor. Let the instructor teach without parental interfearence and let your child enjoy the journey of learning to swim.
