Irvin is mellow, patient, and encouraging. He has been great with my 9 year old son who is a beginner. Good communication and easy to schedule lessons.

Irvin is a great coach. He’s a true student of the game and will teach you not only how to hit the ball but also how to play tennis. He cares about his students and will go the extra mile to help you develop. He makes every lesson fun while still working on improving your technique. I highly recommend him whether you are just learning to play or if you are an advanced player wanting to improve your skills.

    Frequently asked questions

My goal is to help you achieve your goals whether that be improving technique or beginning to learn to play.  To that extent, I am fairly flexible in my approach.  For beginners, I focus on technique, proper grips, and generating topspin.  To do this, I focus on  hand feeding a lot of balls early on to develop proper technique and to train the muscle memory.  Specifically, I teach a semi-western forehand, two-handed backhand, volley fundamentals, split stepping, proper footwork and serve mechanics.  I also work with students who have one-handed backhands.  I am a big believer in putting in a lot of time on the serve and serve return.  For more experienced players, I will work with you to either identify areas for improvement or to work on areas you’ve identified you would like to improve.

USPTA level 2 Certified, Tennis Serve Specialist.  Worked with Rick Macci (coach of 5 world #1 ones including Williams sisters and Andy Roddick), Jose Higuras (head of U.S. high performance program), Jeff Salzsentein (former top 100 player), Hans Podlipnik (Wimbledon QFist), and many others.  Head high school coach for 11 years, active tournament player, patient teacher.

I used to work in tech and coached high school tennis.  I got tired of tech and decided to teach full-time.

Tennis is an extremely difficult sport to play so it will take a lot of work on your own time regardless of the coaching you receive. Have a clear understanding of your goals and what you are trying to achieve. If you are a beginner, there are two schools of thought. I ascribe to teaching top technique from the beginning. Other coaches teach simplified strokes to have better short-term results. Understand the philosophy of the coach and whether that is a good approach for you.

They should have a clear understanding of their goals and how much work it will take to get there.  They need a racket and a pair of tennis shoes.  Find a coach who is the right fit personality and who is passionate about giving you the best instruction.
