Karen Ramirez delights her students with her bubbly personality, humor and contagious energy. She has been teaching piano in Aliso Viejo for the past 25 years. She began studying music at the age of three, won many awards in the certificate of merit program and competitions. She is an intuitive teacher and customizes her curriculum to suit the unique needs of each individual student. Recitals are given twice a year, often with a fun theme, and awards are given to students who show excellence in a variety of subjects. Lessons include, but are not limited to, basic music theory, performance, proper technique, ear-training, sight reading, etc. Supplementary material includes classical, rock, pop, blues, and whatever repetoire the student shows interest in. She guides and encourages students to compose their own music. She is also a wife and mother of two, so she is very kid-friendly. Having a son with special needs, she is open to teaching kids with disabilities. She accepts all ages and teaches beginning through early advanced students. Her rates are competitive, but she teaches in a relaxed, non-competitive environment. She has earned a reputation as being a caring, patient, fun, and friendly teacher. Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
After a potential student or their parent initially contacts me, I set up a free "meet and greet" interview to go over my studio policy, discuss goals, and see if we are the right fit.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Please refer to my profile. In short, I began lessons at an early age, knew that I wanted to teach piano when I was a teenager, studied to do so, and acheived that goal. I've been teaching for over 23 years and love what I do!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$40for a half hour lesson (ages 4-6)
$60for a 45 minute lesson ( ages 7 and up)
$80for an hour lesson (ages 7 and up)
Lessons are chosen based on both the students and teachers schedule. They are the same time and day each week
How did you get started teaching?
I began as an apprentice when I was a teenager under the tutelage of my then piano teacher. I also worked for a music school and taught there before owning my own studio.
What types of students have you worked with?
Ages 4-85. All types. Beginning through early advanced.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My last recital was a Happy Halloween recital where everyone dressed in costume. Everyone had a great time! It was "Spooktacular!" Lol!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I think the initial interview can help determine if the teacher is right for you. Look for their experience, ask to sit in on another student's lesson, if allowed. Ask for references. I invite any new students to my recitals which helps them get a good idea. I have a fun, close knit studio and welcome dedicated students who wish to join!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Am I willing to practice the piano every day in the effective way that the teacher suggests?
Am I overextended with other activities?
Do I think that I can progress by not practicing and just show up weekly to lessons?
Do I have a good piano to practice on?
