At MadChair, one thing that's very different from lessons elsewhere, is bringing in other musicians to jam in a band type setting once the student feels comfortable. This has proven to be a great aid in getting the student accustomed to performing with others if this is one of their personal goals. I am well versed in blues, rock and roll, metal, classical, funk, jazz, and reggae, and of course have always been passionate about teaching, no matter what style you're into.  ... View Profile

I tailor my lessons to the level of the student. I do my best to keep the lessons relevent and interesting for the student. The Speech Level Singing technique is so effective you will see results in minutes, not weeks or months. I recently had a male, rock singer, who studied with another teacher for two years and never experienced a mix or a head voice. We did it in 15 minutes! In two half-hour sessions, he was singing with ease. ... View Profile

Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.

What or who inspired you to start teaching?

It was only a couple years after I started playing that I started teaching friends and family members for fun. It was those after-school sessions and family get-togethers that I started to realize my love for teaching guitar which over time has developed into part of my regular work including the teaching of other stringed instruments such as ukulele as well as voice, harmonica, and songwriting.

What do you love most about your job?

What I love most about teaching is being able to provide the tools to new (or newer) players that I had to figure out on my own. Also, being able to create a productive practice schedule for my students that helps the reach their goals is great. Basically, being able to provide the tools and structure that would have benefited me tremendously in the learning process.

What types of students have you worked with?

My teaching career has had around five stages. Each stage has brought new types of students. As previously mentioned, I started teaching informally in high school to friends and family members. In college I started teaching formally to other students in the dorms and on campus. After college I started teaching community members and students around campus. I then served three years in Peru in the Peace Corps. During this time I was able to teach children and youth both in personal lessons and in group lessons, which was an amazing experience. Finally, upon return to the United States and a move to San Diego, I’m now teaching children, teens and adults alike. So long story short - I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to teach in a variety of settings to different types of students ranging from children to adults in different countries.

Tell us about your passion for teaching

What keeps me passionate about teaching is when I can really connect with my students as their instructor and friend. This allows a laid-back environment in which learning is fun and not stressful. Seeing a student’s eyes light up when he or she performs a part that was seemingly impossible just a couple months ago is a great feeling!

What advice would you give aspiring students?

There’s a good amount of advice I give my students during their first lesson to make sure they are set for the lessons to come. 1. Don’t rush. Make sure whatever you are trying to play fast or proficiently, can first be played cleanly and slowly and slowly build up from there. A metronome can be your best friend here. 2. Stay loose. Be aware of your body while playing. Don’t only think of your fingers and hands. Rather, check out the tension in your body. You should be loose and relaxed - never tense and stressed. 3. Don’t give up! This one sounds a bit trite or cliche, but if you keep at it and practice consistently and intentionally (at least almost) every day, you’ll get there. Those are just a few pieces of advice that come to mind.
