Cathy Hirata is the founder of Creative Music Students, which was started in 2000. Cathy began studying music at the age of 8. A scholarship recipient and graduate of San Jose State University, she received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance, training under the founding members of Opera San Jose -- New York Metropolitan Opera Singer Irene Dalis and Oberlin Conservatory Graduate Dr. David Rohrbaugh, going on to receive a secondary teaching credential in music education and has taken classes at the University of California Davis Mind Institute certification program in autism studies. In addition, she is certified in Simply Music, Signing Smart, a member of the Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory Achievement Program, and the former Co-Representative for the Greater Bay Area Chapter of the California Partnership of Kindermusik Educator’s and the Co-Founder of The Special Needs Resource Fair, North County San Diego. In addition to overseeing the day to day operations of Creative Music Students, she is the creative director currently focusing on program development which includes her companion business, Innovative Music Conferences, an International Training Conference for Music Teachers.

    I offer a free introductory lesson to evaluate where the student is at.  Once complete, then we discuss what programs are appropriate for the student.

    A scholarship recipient and graduate of San Jose State University, I received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance, and a secondary teaching credential in music education and have attended courses at the University of California Davis Mind Institute for a certificate in autism studies. In addition, I have formal voice and piano training with the founding members of Opera San Jose — New York Metropolitan Opera Singer Irene Dalis, Oberlin College Professor David Rohrbaugh and SJSU Choral Director Dr. Charlene Archibeque. I have performed with the San Jose Symphony and San Jose Opera. Past certifications include: Certified Signing Smart and Licensed Kindermusik Educator, the Co-Representative for the Greater Bay Area Chapter of the California Partnership of Kindermusik Educator’s, and is currently a member of the Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory Achievement Program. 

    I founded Creative Music Students (formerly Where Music Begins) in 2000.

    In addition to the above, she is also the founder of the San Diego International Music Teachers Symposium, Innovative Music Conferences, The Special Needs Resource Fair and has been recognized by Kindermusik International as a Maestro for her work with children with special needs children.

    Lessons are on a month to month basis and pro-rated over a 12 month time period.  All students receive 45 lessons per year. 

    I started my studio in 2000 offering a variety of music educaiton programs. 

    I have worked with all ages and abilities, from newborn to 87 as well as students with special needs.  I have also been teaching remotly/online for over 10 years.  At the current time, this is the best way for lessons to take place.
