Our founder, John Paul is an award-winning pianist and critically acclaimed songwriter and music producer, having been featured on both radio and television... most notably on CNN! He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Piano Performance from the University of California Irvine, studying under Kei Akagi. He studied classical vocal technique for two years as a protege of Croatian opera super-star Dubravka Zubovic before moving to Los Angeles and studying popular vocal technique with Macy Gray's vocal coach.
When he was six years old, John Paul would tell his kindergarten teacher that he was going to be a piano player when he grew up... there's still a tile at Bathgate Elementary with a poorly painted piano on it. As a teen, he was accepted into the prestigious Grammy In The Schools program where he performed with the likes of Earth, Wind, and Fire and Otmaro Ruiz!
John Paul has held just about every job there is to hold in the music industry, from Piano Man to Song Writer to Recording Artist to DJ to Music Producer to Session Musician to Private Instructor for 12 years. He enjoys sharing his wealth of experience with the next generation, providing them with a complete tool kit for making music in the 21st century. He resides in La Costa, CA with his wife and business partner Nathalie Keene.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We will start by learning about who you are. What are your musical ambitions? We will then build a lesson plan based on what your goals are. For a beginner, we like to do a couple of lessons without sheet music of any kind. The student gets acquainted with the landscape of the piano, and we learn a couple of easy songs note by note. It is extremely important for the person to have a relationship with the piano and understand what playing feels like before getting into the theory or reading of music. After the initial period of getting acquainted with the landscape of the piano, we will either begin learning to read (if you desire the traditional classical approach), or we will begin learning about chord theory (if you desire the modern popular approach). No matter which approach you desire to learn, we will incorporate bits of teachings from both approaches as we see fit for each student's development. We believe there are many different paths to take when learning music, but the end goal is always the same... awakening your musical genius!
