Mike R. says, "If you have been on the fence about starting your fitness goals because you lack motivation or don’t know where to start, I highly recommend starting with Steve. Since I’ve started I’ve left feeling great after each session, motivated for the next one and am very happy with the growth in my arms and moving my belt more than a few notches in instead of out. There is nothing like the feeling of having someone who guides you and holds you accountable. Thanks Steve for getting me motivated !!" Read more

Aaron S. says, "My first training was cool, we went over some wrestling offense and defense moves, then did some live sparring and he taught me a lot of technical moves that seem like will work in real life. My second session went over conditioning and more boxing practice. So far I like what he’s teaching me, he’s a cool guy and pushes me to keep going even though I’m tired. Overall a good coach. Thanks Frank! " Read more

Robert G. says, "Audrey Marchionno Acting Coach Review By Robert Garnsey Let me start by saying that Audrey Marchionno is a top-notch acting coach. She is well-versed in a wide range of acting styles and applications and capable of teaching them actors of any age or experience level. In less than two months under Audrey’s tutelage, my daughter Portia’s acting has improved by leaps and bounds. For one thing, she is much more confident and able to make better character choices to suit and role. In addition, Audrey has inspired her to new heights by teaching her how to portray a wide variety of characters that cover the entire emotional spectrum and to view the scene from many different angles. This has allowed Portia to discover the subtleties in the scene that make the difference between an average and an outstanding performance. Under Audrey, my daughter is not just acting—she is becoming her characters! But to focus solely on Audrey’s formidable teaching skills would be to do her a disservice. She has been so much more than an instructor to my daughter Portia. She is a trusted confidante, a mentor, and a true friend who tells her students what they NEED to hear rather than what they want to hear. We are truly blessed to have Audrey in our lives. If you or your child are ready to take your acting to the next level, Audrey is the coach for you. I would recommend her 100%." Read more

Although I primarily focus on street self defense, and other related strategies for survival. I do on many occasions, also train in traditional Martial Arts. I’m currently teaching Chinese Kung Fu, but now, I’m trying to divert to my other training arts . Such as the Japanese Martial Arts, in this case, Bujutsu. Or Classical Japanese Weapons Arts. Such as: -Hanbo Jutsu=Art of the three foot short staff -Tanto Jutsu=Art of Knife Fighting, and knife self defense -Yari Jutsu=Ancient Japanese Art of Spear Fighting -Naginata Jutsu=Ancient Japanese Art of the Halberd/Pole Arm And so on, and so forth. I have also trained extensively, in a non-weapon

Jorge G. says, "As crime rises in Los Angeles and across the country, being a victim also increases. I was looking for ways to protect myself and my loved ones. Our 2nd amendment keeps being threatened by our government and making it more challenging for hard-working, law-abiding, tax-paying Americans to purchase a gun and ammunition. It's recommended to have the proper training to use and maintain this hardware. The hurdles to getting a license to carry a concealed weapon are complicated. They don't grant it to just anyone. What is the next best thing I can do to protect myself? It's self-defense training. I found David Dangcil. He is incredible, very knowledgeable, with many years of experience in multiple forms of martial arts. He teaches valuable techniques. He's teaching me the tactical methods I will need if I'm ever in a dangerous situation so I don't become a victim. They are techniques to take out an assailant in the most efficient way possible. David is patient with me and goes slow to make sure I understand the movements and how they could be used in multiple ways. I'm more aware of my surroundings. Even though I have a lot to learn, I feel more confident that I now have a fighting chance. It's incredible how this man can be so dangerous with his moments that it's scary. I hope to train with David for as long as possible. I highly recommend David if you're looking for group or private setting training." Read more

Your jiu jitsu questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do jiu-jitsu classes cost?

The average cost of jiu-jitsu classes is $50 to $200 per month, depending on the class age range, number of classes per week, your commitment or contract length, and the instructor's expertise and reputation. Jiu-jitsu gyms and academies are more expensive if they have well-known instructors who are national champions on staff.

In addition to the monthly class or gym fee, you'll have extra costs for gis and belts. A jiu-jitsu gi costs $60 to $120 on average, while belts cost $15 to $30. Some gyms also charge a fee for belt promotion. However, this is frowned upon by reputable academies and is often considered a warning sign of a low-quality gym.

What is jiu-jitsu?

Jiu-jitsu is a self-defense martial art based on grappling and ground control, focusing on the skill of taking your opponent to the ground and wrestling for a dominant position. jiu-jitsu uses the principles of leverage, pressure, grip, timing, and angles to subdue your opponent.

Jiu-Jitsu classes provide:

  • Self-defense skills
  • A fun and exciting way to improve your fitness
  • Increased focus and concentration

Where did jiu-jitsu originate?

Japanese martial arts expert Mitsuyo Maeda was the first to bring grappling and groundwork-focused jiu-do demonstrations to other countries. In 1914, Carlos Gracie became one of Maeda's first Brazilian students. Carlos and his brother Hélio Gracie, along with fellow students Luis França and Oswaldo Fadda, later went on to develop Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Is jiu-jitsu a good workout?

Is jiu-jitsu good for self-defense?

Jiu-jitsu is a highly effective self-defense martial art. Jiu-jitsu teaches you how to control a stronger and larger opponent, allowing smaller or weaker individuals to defend themselves and increasing their ability to escape dangerous confrontations.

Is jiu-jitsu dangerous?

Though jiu-jitsu is a contact sport, when practiced with proper technique and form it is safer than many other martial arts because it doesn't focus on striking your opponent with punches and kicks. In statewide competitions, jiu-jitsu resulted in fewer injuries than judo, Taekwondo, mixed martial arts, or traditional wrestling.

Where can I find the best jiu-jitsu classes near me?

Follow these tips to find jiu-jitsu academies and gyms near you:

  • Look for a reputable academy that focuses on jiu-jitsu rather than a mixed martial arts gym.
  • Research the instructors' competition record and reputation.
  • Read academy and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the academy offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the academy in person to confirm it is clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free day or week-long trial membership to ensure the school is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask jiu-jitsu academies?

  • Is the gym beginner friendly?
  • What kind of contracts do you offer?
  • Do you offer a free trial class?
  • What is your class schedule?
  • How many students do you have?
  • How many students are in a typical class?
  • What is the instructor's lineage and competition record?
  • What kind of uniform is required? Do you offer no-gi classes?
  • Do your students and instructors compete regularly?
  • Do you charge for belt promotions?
  • How often do you clean your mats?
