About

Hi, I'm Michael Le Van. Here's a quick bio: I have been playing jazz and classical piano for over 50 years, have taught piano for 35 years, and have a degree in piano performance and composition. I have been a full-time musician my entire life, I've released 7 published CD's, and have had my own jazz trio since 1986. I am experienced in teaching both classical and jazz improvisation, and take into account each students individual needs. I teach all levels from beginners to advanced, all ages.

I enjoy watching my students progress over time. I also like getting to know them as individuals. My playing is an important part of who I am and sharing that as a teacher makes me happy. I have indepth experience and knowledge for those who just want to learn how to play the piano for recreation or those who want to become professional musicians like myself. I look foward to seeing my students and enjoy sharing my love of music.

Michael is able to clearly break down jazz elements and relate them to the piano. He is an excellent player with years of experience and he gives his students step by step practice exercises to help them achieve their goals. Michael is very patient and encouraging which really helps with my confidence even when tackling new and difficult concepts.

I have been a student of Michael Le Van for many years and have studied both classical piano and jazz improvisation with him. He is a kind, warm, patient teacher who works well with both children and adults. I really look forward to my lessons because I always learn something new. He is very versatile and can teach any style of piano music. In addition to being an incredible teacher, he is also a gifted composer who plays original ballad compositions which are very lyrical and heartfelt. He also composes fast upbeat jazz as well. Michael has produced several CDs, the latest called Then Another Turns with Elena Gilliam, vocalist and A Different Shade of Blue a few years ago. Michael performs with his trio at many different venues and I would suggest that you catch one of his amazing performances. Thank you to Michael for enriching my life with music and helping me on this journey.

Doesnt matter what your level is...beginning, intermediate, or advanced. Or what kind of music you want to play....jazz, classical, blues, ragtime, etc. Or where you might need to improve...reading music, composition, harmonic structure, improvisation, technique. This man can teach you. His comprehensive knowledge, vast scope, and keyboard mastery are seriously impressive. I have known Mike for 30 years from music school up to the present day. And even though I have earned my own music degree, I am currently a student of his and Im learning so much. He is worth every penny. A complete pianist...he can do it all. And youd be hard pressed to find a nicer guy. You want to learn? Call him now. What are you waiting for?

Michael is a very patient teacher as well as an outstanding musician. He quickly determines advice for me with songs and then works through the music with me to ensure that I understand. His long history of teaching has obviously helped to develop a great style. He never makes you feel intimidated and in fact helped me to express the music better then I ever had with other teachers. I highly recommend him as a piano teacher for any age, at any level and for a wide variety of musical styles. His love for music always shines through.

    Frequently asked questions

I patiently work with my students to explore their potential and build on their skills appropriately. Each student has different needs and I like to tailor lessons for the individual. Together we build on strengths and learn new techniques for overall accomplishments. With a committment to practice, they become well versed at the piano. My students usually continue lessons with me for many years and continue to grow because I tap into their desire to improve.

My bachelore's degrees are in piano performance and composition from California State University Fullerton.

I have also taught piano for 35 years.
