About

I began my Martial Arts journey in 1973 in Tuscon Arizona by studying Ed Parker's Kenpo Karate. After some years in that system I eventually earned a black belt. At this point I chose to spend some time away from Kenpo to look at other Arts, to see what they had to offer.

While researching different methods I found Jeet Kune Do (JKD). I started my JKD training in Los Angeles in 1987 with Sifu Steve Grody (Originally under Guro Dan Inosanto, 1st generation LA Chinatown student of Bruce Lee) and studied with him privately for 5 years.

At this point I began to work with Sifu Chris Kent (Also originally under Guro Dan Inosanto) and studied in his JKD and Kali/Escrima group classes until he left Los Angeles in 1997, at which time I received my instructor-ship from him in JKD and Kali/Escrima .

Around this time a small informal group was formed consisting of students originally from Sifu Chris's advanced class. We met twice a week to train, experiment, research and test theories. Since most of the group had studied various arts over the years, we all brought something different to look at and play with. Sifu Chris would come back over the years to visit or train and frequently would put on a 1 or 2 day seminar for the group and our students.

In early 1999 I was invited into a small group headed by Sifu Pete Jacobs (1st Generation LA Chinatown student of Bruce Lee) and trained with him until late 2013.

Over the years since I began my JKD training I've had the great fortune to have been able to study with many of Bruce Lee's 1st and 2nd generation students, each representing either the Seattle, Oakland or LA Chinatown School eras. They all have different pieces of the puzzle to offer.

With 40+ years of martial arts training experience I bring an approach that is based on the most simple, direct and economical way to deal with a situation. I believe the training methodology must closely represent realistic circumstances. My main interest is in the practical application of JKD principles and scientific analysis of the physics of motion.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Jeff Scharlin

Ive been training with Jeff for over 9 years now.
Jeff is a phenomenal teacher in JKD.
He has taught me so much more than simply self defense.
I came to Jeff as with a clean slate, knowing nothing about martial arts. Fast forward 9 years, Im an apprentice instructor who has learned both inner peace, patience, and a unique skill set only true JKD students in their higher level of training can relate to.
We are all on the same path. Some of us are further along than others.
I strongly recommend Sifu Scharlin for anyone whos primary interest is learning the true art of JKD.
Dont let life pass you by!
Call Jeff, and start your personal journey that caters to your own self expression in the art Bruce Lee began in the 1960s.

I have trained with Jeff for many years. I highly recommend Jeff as a JKD instructor. I had always been interested in studying martial arts but probably would have never started or gotten far if I had taken the more conventional approach of group lessons. When I saw Jeff training someone in a park some 9 years ago, I quickly realized what I was seeing is what I wanted to learn. Jeff really caters his teachings to your ability and your chosen path to growth. What I really appreciate about my lessons with Jeff is the focus on details. You can be practicing one move and he will make a simple suggestion of changing one small thing and all the sudden it all makes sense and flows together in a way you didn’t think was possible. If you’ve been thinking about learning JKD, you should look no further than Jeff.

Ive been training under Jeff for roughly three years, having previously done Tae Kwon Do for almost twenty. Longtime students of classical martial arts regularly report a fairly thorough re-education when studying an art like Jeet Kune Do, and my experience of JKD is no exception.
Right on the surface there is a tremendous difference in the expression of combat when you study an art that is primarily combative (as opposed to traditional/ceremonial/sports or performance-based). The more I learn, the happier I am that I never got in a fight as a Tae Kwon Do practitioner. I dont want to give anyone the impression that traditional martial arts are a waste of time. Its fair to say (and Jeff will happily tell you this) that if you practice anything for several decades youll be proficient, and its a common axiom among open-minded martial artists that different styles are just different paths up the same mountain. A 30 year Karate guy and a 30 year TKD guy will probably agree on more than they disagree on. The wonderful thing about JKD is that you dont have to wait nearly that long to figure out what works, and works spectacularly.
Another thing that classical martial arts are often praised for is their emphasis on philosophy. Its worth calling to mind that Bruce Lee, in addition to being beyond brilliant when it came to fighting, was also a very serious scholar. Bruces dedication to the written word has definitely filtered down to subsequent generations of JKD practitioners, and Jeffs instruction is wonderfully cerebral. Getting good at fighting is a great way to make yourself more useful, but getting good at thinking should be equally important to a good fighter. Ive learned a lot about combat, but Ive also learned a lot about being a person, and you cant put a price on that.
I believe Ive learned more in the last three years with Jeff than I did in ten as a Tae Kwon Do student. Ive come to recognize that becoming a real martial artist is one of the most important things you can do with your life. If youre even remotely curious about any of this stuff, I would enthusiastically recommend that you start training with Jeff.
