Stephanie T. says, "Malena has taught my son for years and I recently started taking lessons from her as well. She has an exceptional gift for balancing technical instruction with creativity. She tailors her lessons to your goals and has the ability to explain concepts so clearly. She is great at improvising, pivoting lesson plans (when we come ill-prepared) and we are inspired every time we hear her play. She has a genuine passion. I 1000% recommend." Read more

Yunxin K. says, "We are absolutely thrilled with the piano lessons my son has been receiving from Marianne since April 2024. From the very first lesson, Marianne has been a wonderful teacher—patient, kind, and humorous. She has a unique ability to make learning both enjoyable and challenging, which has kept my son engaged and excited about his progress. Marianne tailors each lesson to his individual needs, helping him build confidence while improving his technique and musicality. We've seen remarkable growth in his skills, but more importantly, his love for music continues to flourish under her guidance. We feel so lucky to have found such a dedicated and inspiring teacher. Normalyn N. says, "My daughter started taking ukulele lessons with Eric on Zoom during the spring of the pandemic. At 10-years-old, she was the youngest and only child in a beginners group ukulele class of adults. But she held her own and with Eric's coaching, she was able to learn to play fairly quickly. It was great for her to be able to learn an instrument and have a creative outlet during that tough time of quarantine. It also sparked the beginning of her love for music that has continued to grow now as she is in her teen years. As she got older, she transitioned from ukulele lessons to private guitar (both acoustic and electric) as well as piano lessons. Through the years she has learned so much from Eric. She went from a kid with no musical background to reading music fluently, studying music theory, playing four instruments, and performing guitar solos at school concerts. It's amazing how much she was able to learn through her weekly virtual lessons with Eric. He is an amazing music teacher and great with kids. He is patient, encouraging, and able to deliver instruction in a way that makes it easy and enjoyable to learn. I would highly recommend Eric to anyone looking for a music teacher for their young kids or teens." Read more

Your Piano Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

Amy is super talented, very organized, is flexible, uses creative teaching methods, and is very kind and respectful. She took on a special challenge when she agreed to do a joint lesson with me (a seventy year old and my seven year old grandson). We are now in our third year and loving it. I can't say enough great things about Amy and her teaching skills. It is hard to imagine how much both myself and my grandson have progressed. Thanks to Amy!

I’m 54 a year old woman and a total novice with respect to reading music and playing any musical instrument. Recently, I decided it was something I wanted to learn so I picked up a guitar and googled a list of instructors. Started working with Tom Stroll at MindfulMusicLessons. By the first phone conversation I was asked a few questions about skill level, if any and my musical muses. From there Tom was able to formulate the perfect approach toward a starting point geared specifically for me. The lessons have been wonderful as Tom is very patient, kind and intuitive. The homework is of the caliber that makes real progress possible. I appreciate Tom expecting a lot from me even though I just started learning guitar from basically nothing. It’s easy to be pigeonholed by age or beginner status and do three lessons of scales and nursery rhymes. But instead Tom believed in my ability to meet a set goal with a curated theme geared towards my own interests. I’m very glad I’ve started up with Tom and would absolutely recommend him to anyone interested in honing existing skills or taking the plunge with something brand new and intimidating. Tom can bring out the best in you. -Christine
