About
Having sung myself onstage with the great singers at the MET, and chosen, coached, and conducted hundreds of singers for over 4 decades at Virginia Opera -- where I am Artistic Director Emeritus -- I really know how to work quickly and effectively with singers to get their voices to ring freely and to communicate expressively and musically. QUICKLY and SUCCESSFULLY!
Peter Mark’s powerful skill set draws from a varied and comprehensive experience in opera. As Founding General and Artistic Director of Virginia Opera he conducted and mentored young singers -- many who have become world renowned stars like Renee Fleming, Diana Soviero, Lawrence Brownlee, Frederick Burchinal.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I listen carefully to each new student, assess what they need, make sure it is what they think they need, and then find a way to give them the tools they are missing -- to really know what they are doing vocally --- so that they not only improve their singing but also understand how and why it is working -- so they are from then on in control.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
In music all my life. Sang as chief bot soprano at MET OPERA.
Concertmaster Columbia University Orchestra.
Principal Violist Juilliard Orchestra, Chicago Lyric Opera.
Built, ran, cast, and conducted Virginia Opera for 36 years as General & Artistic Director -- now Artistic Director Emeritus
International Opera conductor, coach, consultant
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$100 per hour independent of pianist and venue if needed.
But we can also work without pianist -- purely vocally.
And either in person or by SKYPE or FACE TIME
How did you get started teaching?
I have always been a teacher. Full Professor of Music in the University of California system.
Maestro means teacher in Italian. As a maestro/Conductor of opera for over 40 years I have all that experience too.
What types of students have you worked with?
Singers on every level -- professional, non-professional, student level, crossover singers, actors, public speakers.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Presenting my singers to a Panel of Artistic Professionals at the end of every Masterclass Series
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure that you find someone who can help you immediately and quickly. And noticeably!!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How your voice responds to your own commands when you sing. What are the successes? What are the failures? The problems areas?
What style and repertoire do you want to sing?
Do you feel you have the voice for that?
Are you willing to do what it takes to develop a technique so you can sing reliably ?
