Alison J. says, "I can’t recommend Ascend and Defend Academy enough! I came in as a complete beginner, just looking to learn how to protect myself when I’m out with my 12-month-old. The environment was welcoming, and the training was broken down in a way that felt easy to understand and actually fun. I really appreciate how patient and encouraging the instruction was too. I’m very shy, but I had fun. Definitely a place where beginners like me can feel comfortable while still being challenged." Read more

In addition to the class fee, you'll have extra costs for uniforms, belts, and testing fees. A karate uniform—also called a Gi, karategi, or dogi—costs $60 to $120 on average, while belts cost $5 to $20. Some schools include a gi and belt with your first month's tuition. Testing fees vary by school, but beware of schools that charge more than $20 per test.

  • Research the instructors' competition record and reputation.
  • Read dojo and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the school offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the dojo in person to confirm it is clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free trial class to ensure the school is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the membership contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask karate schools before joining?

I have been training in self defense with Henry Nguyen for over 2 months now racking up over 15 one hour sessions and I have learned a lot from our time. My schedule is a little crazy (working 15hours/day) so for me finding someone to work with my schedule was a little challenging but when I first talked to Henry he was very understanding to my schedule and was willing on seeing me 2 times a week from 8:30pm to 9:30pm at my house. Henry is extremely passionate about teaching self defense and if you ever ask him a question he does not know how to answer, you can expect a text the next morning answering your question in detail. I enjoy the session with him and will be continuing to have more
