About

Hi, I'm Leanne Schafer. I've been a piano teacher in the Sacramento, CA area for over 35 years. I love teaching adults and children over the age of 7 all kinds of music, from the Classics to jazz, Broadway tunes, old standards and new pops at any level from beginning to advanced. Students will learn how to read music and all the basics or improve their skills and play music they know and love.

I love teaching students of various ages and skill levels as well as finding the music that each student will enjoy and want to play. I have taught all ages from 7 to 75, and each student is unique.

Frequently asked questions

This depends on whether the student is a beginner, a transfer student, or one with previous experience.

With beginners I introduce them to the the keyboard and the books we will use going through the first pages with them.

Transfer students often want to continue in the books they were using, or may want a different type of music. I make sure they understand the music and basic concepts.

Students with previous experience usually want to start in a beginning book and review the basics moving quickly through as they explore music they want to play.

As lessons continue with each student I learn more about them, how they learn, what they need, and what they want to play. I'm very flexible and love helping each student achieve their goals and enjoying the music they want to play.

I hold a B.A. degree in child development and a CA teaching credential. I have taught preschool through sixth grade.

I have taken several music courses in college including theory classes.

I took piano lessons for many years at Pease Conservatory and with Barbara Weiman both of Sacramento.

My rates are $124 per month for 1/2 hr. once a week. There are no enrollment fees. Music books are extra.

My mother taught me to play the piano as a child, and then I began to take formal lessons. As an adult one instructor encouraged me to teach and mentored me as I got started. I have enjoyed teaching ever since.

I have taught children and adults throughout the years. Several of the children were mildly Autistic but did very well in piano and were a joy to teach. Several children have been hyperactive, but I keep them engaged and busy.

In recent years I have been teaching many adults of all ages, both beginners as well as returning with previous experience. Some still work full time, and others are retired.

Recently one of my best students graduated from high school. She was my student for 11 years and is autistic. She had a very difficult time getting through school, and her parents' divorce. But she was one of the most talented piano students I have ever had. She played with great feeling and worked hard to play each piece correctly. She will continue on to college and piano lessons in another area.

Ask friends for references. View websites for piano teachers in your area. Check reviews on piano teachers. Call prospects and talk with them. See if local music stores offer lessons. Several sites on line, such as this one, will do the search for you and offer the names of several teachers in your area.

Think about what your goals are for you or your child. Talk with the child about the need to practice between lessons, and the commitment. If you are an adult, consider what you want to learn and what music you want to play. Do you have the time to practice and will you make it happen? Realize that playing the piano takes time as with learning anything new, and there will be highs and lows.
