About
When I was a young child learning music, I had a great teacher who seamlessly combined music theory and harmony with piano technique itself. As a composer, I try to pass this method on. Even if you have no aspirations toward composing, it is a great way to discover the special details to bring out in a piece, bringing it to life.
While my emphasis is classical, I have done plenty of improvisation in a variety of styles. I find improv and learning melodies by ear to be a great supplement to reading music.
I also teach both composition and piano at The Crowden School in Berkeley https://www.crowden.org/

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Besides getting to know them a bit, I focus on rhythm right from the beginning. Even beginners can play simple duets with me, and since rhythm is the essence of music it leads to a good foundation for difficulties later.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated from Yale College with a degree in music and computer science. I've accompanied instrumentalists and singers on the piano since I was a child, and have been the music director at St. Jerome Church. I am also an amateur singer.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $80 for a one hour lesson, $60 for 45 min, and $40 for a half hour. Students pay by the month.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with beginners aged 6, more advanced teenagers, as well as adults looking to get back into music.
