About

My strength is as a performing voice teacher. I have been teaching voice lessons for about 15 years. My initial experience was as section leader in the 7th Army Soldiers' Chorus stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. I have sung lead roles in several musicals including Don Quixote in "Man of La Mancha," and Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof." Operatically I am a graduate of the San Francisco Merola Opera Program and have performed with such companies as Goldovsky Grand Opera Theater, Eastern Opera Theater, Western Opera Theater, Scholar Opera, San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Yale Summer School of Music and Art. I attempt to bring a sense of humor to my teaching and employ various theatrical aspects to develop the feeling of presenting a song or character in singing. I'm also a nice guy and don't believe in forcing people but encouraging development.

I enjoy watching students learn and develop in their lessons. It's challening learning how to earn their trust and improving on their talent and teach them enjoy singing and music.

Richard works with me at my level and where I want to improve. I did not read or understand written music very well, but just wanted to sing better. However, I am learning to read music much better. Also he has introduced me to different styles that I enjoy but were never in my interest before. And his sense of humor adds to a good lesson.

    Frequently asked questions

Depening up their experience, I typically have a student sing a song they are comfortable singing with or without accompaniment.  Since all lessons are online until the pandemic has subsided, having a pre-recorded accompaniment would help, but singing without is also all right.  I need to get a sense of what your experience or basic talent and/or skill is and get a feeling whether we could be a match.

I have a Bachelor's degress in opera and classical performance from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.  I received a scholarshop to sing a role at the Yale Summer School of Music & Art and have studied at Indiana University, one of the leading opera schools in the country today.  I am a graduate and recipient of an Osher Award in the Merola Opera Program with San Francisco Opera and have many years of experience singing in many operatic and musical theater roles.  I also studied Italian at the Cultural Institute of Florence, Italy.

I charge $60 per hour for online voice lessons and only accept one hour long lessons.

A friend was teaching at the Community Music Center here in San Francisco and I substituted for him for one quarter and have been teaching both privately and at that school since then.
