Mr. Matt Smith is one of the most qualified and passionate music educators in Southern California, and I HIGHLY recommend him. His expertise covers a wide range of topics in orchestral music, composition, music history, musicology, piano performance technique, wind instrument performance, and industry production/engineering. He is extremely professional, but he also always ensures that you feel comfortable with his awesome sense of humor, personal musical anecdotes, and dad jokes! After having been his student for years, Matt has helped me get into some of the best college music programs in California. Out of all the music educators I have worked with before, his pedagogy is completely unmatched--to the extent that it has affected how I teach my own students. He is the type of educator that will go above and beyond to ensure that you have a balanced and holistic sense of what being a musician truly is.

    Frequently asked questions

Every student is different! When first starting with a student who is new to me, however, there are a few things to asses. For example, how much musical experience do you have?

If none whatsoever, great! I love working with beginners of all ages!

If you're a working professional looking to tighten up a few techniques and we agree that I can help you do that, it's usually pretty fast work to figure out what we should be spending time on.

If you're anywhere in between those extremes, again, we'll figure out what you already know and we'll go from there.

That said, every student is different, and ultimately my goal is to help you be the best you can for wherever you find yourself on your own musical journey. Let's get started and see how far we can go!

I am a professional composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist actively working in the Los Angeles music scene. Check out my website if you're curious what kinds of projects I've worked on!

I have a Bachelor's and Master's of Music with a focus in composition from the Cleveland Institute of Music, one of the best schools in the world.

I have been teaching a variety of musical subjects since I was in high school. I've taught at public and privite schools in Texas and California, I've taught private lessons and group tutoring sessions at the Pasadena Conservatory and the Little Chopin Piano School, both in LA. I have also guest lectured at Stanford University during the Advanced Suzuki Institute, and have lectured on music history and theory at a number of concert series, summer programs, and schools throughout the country.

I have also studied Dalcroze and Suzuki pedagogy, although I have no formal certification in those methods. While at Little Chopin, I prepared students for Certificate of Merit tests, National Guild Auditions, and college auditions.

Right now I am only offering lessons via Zoom due to Covid-19.

My standard price for remote lessons is $60 per hour.

Half-hour and forty-five minute lessons are prorated.
