About

I work closely with parents in parent education as well as helping very young through pre-professional violin students. Since I also teach beginning through intermediate piano and theory, students have the option of taking both violin and piano lessons in one convenient place.

I work most effectively with students who show a high degree of interest, helping families and students to discover all aspects of music and musical learning and in setting goals for their musical development. Introducing students to inspirational pieces of music and musical learning and seeing them gain mastery of skills and the independence and joy that comes with skills acquisition is my goal.

Isabel K.

We interviewed a few violin teachers hoping to find one who has experience teaching children as young as 3+, which is when our son started, and neither of us are violinists. Our son asked for a violin when he was 3 and we wanted to fulfill his wish. The task of finding a suitable teacher is harder than one thinks. Kids at that age are active, have limited communication skills, and teachers can underestimate their capabilities, but likewise, children are very good at manipulating the situation and it can turn into a stressful situation for the parents + teacher. After 4 months with Miss Dennie I want to commend her for her patience and keeping the class fun. She is very patient with our son, teaches him seasonal songs (Halloween and Christmas right now), teaches him piano during breaks and also a bit of dance. She is very expressive with her movements and we can see him copying her movements when he practices at home which is great to have violin role models like that. We also like that she has a lot of knowledge about music programs and activities in the Bay Area so as to give us options as our son gets older and better. The analogies and narration she uses so he comprehends music tempos, interpretation, etc, are very much in-line with what hes able to comprehend at his young age. We also appreciate the feedback she gives us with regards to his progress. Our son is very committed to violin (despite his young age!) and we commend Miss Dennie for taking this seriously by continuously stimulating him and giving him a well-rounded experience.

My son has been taking violin lessons from Dennie Mehocich for seven years and she has been excellent. She cares about his progress and makes sure he has the fundamentals down before moving on. I highly recommend her.

Frequently asked questions

I assess where the student is in their exposure to music, taking into consideration age and experience, and help students to clarify goals.  When working with very young children I start with a number of parents-only lessons first, as per the Suzuki method.
