About

Hello prospective students!

My name is Michael Freed. I am a 23 year old violinist originally from Columbus, Indiana. I have been studying the violin and stringed instruments for most of my life (20 years!), and am currently a student of Andrew McIntosh at the Herb Alpert School of Music at California Institute of the Arts. Before moving to LA, I was a pupil of Laura Andrews (MM) in my hometown. I spent a year studying at Indiana University, where I served as concertmaster for the All-Campus Orchestra, and took lessons with Mimi Zweig. I currently have my Bachelor’s in performance and plan to earn a masters, while learning how best to market music effectively, keeping it relative in schools and maintaining its vital, permanent part in our culture.

How long have I been teaching?

5 years of private teaching. I am certified to teach Suzuki Violin School books 1-3. I have also coached chamber groups for SCVYO in the Santa Clarita Valley, and been a group instructor for the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic strings program.

My current private students have attained leadership chairs in regional orchestras throughout LA and the San Fernando Valley including LAYO, VPO, CSUN Symphony Orchestra, and their individual school orchestras.

Do I have any other hobbies besides music?

I am an avid tennis player and figure skater (roller, since moving to CA). I enjoy hiking, going to the beach, and being outdoors in general. 🌳

Message to new students:

Fall in love with your instrument every day! Music comes from deep within us, and it is our gift to share it with others. Music is a combination of play and discipline, but it is the latter that makes us better musicians. Let’s discover music together!

Michael doesn’t conform to specific books and going from lowest level book to highest level book etc. He likes to explain about the music and the technique he’s teaching so that you understand how it will help you in your future playing of violin. He gives you pieces to work on that will develop your own playing style while learning the basic necessary techniques to truly learn the instrument.
