Hello, I started playing guitar in my teenage years and opened up my own business at the age of 18. Immediately fell in love with buisness, guitar, and music. After a few years of learning from the great guitarists such as, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, B.B. King, and the great jazz master Pat Matheny, I quickly realized I wanted to show my friends and family. My friends couldn’t believe it, and from then on, I knew I had a business in helping people improve their skill sets. ... View Profile

I am a great learner. I believe I am a great teacher. I had to do it on my own and I would love to teach beginner level students how to play the guitar in ways it makes sense for them. Centuries ago Shakespeare once wrote "if music be the food of love, play on." This is how I feel about music and especially playing the guitar. Once you understand the basics of guitar playing, it is easy to accelerate to intermediate level. And you will absolutely love guitar playing and making music. I believe I can teach you the tricks to get over the entry level humps. ... View Profile

Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.

Mulvey Music

Jon Mulvey · Santa Cruz, CA

About Jon

Jon Mulvey hails from Los Angeles, California, where he picked up his first guitar when he was just seven years old. Formal Jazz guitar training started at age 11 and he began touring internationally at 15 with top acts. He earned a music composition degree in the Bay Area and then studied under guitar great Joe Satriani. After vaulting onto the world stage, Mulvey directed his expertise to the studio, where he has participated in over 1500 recordings. But playing guitar, bass, or keys, as well as engineering, producing, and mastering albums in the studio, are only a few of his talents.

Ten years he was a member of Mingus, with Dorian Mingus (son of legendary Jazz Bassist/Composer Charles Mingus). Mulvey combined business savvy with his love for music and launched Two Hearts Records, focused on world and instrumental music with his new partner, Deborah Yates. Mulvey is also a sponsored clinician for EMG Pick ups and Ibanez Guitars.

What or who inspired you to start teaching?

I grew up in a musical household. My Mother was a Pianist and Beethoven scholar. She was my primary inspiration. I went on to have many teachers who inspired me greatly. But my lessons with Joe Satriani were the most influential and incredibly inspiring.

What do you love most about your job?

Sharing the learning process with each of my students. If you have had as many students as I have. You find that you both grow thru the shared learning experience. My relationships with each student are so unique. Because of that I build a curriculum around the individual. How we think and learn is so personal. I love to discover the learning process of each of my students. And develop methods and techniques based on their interests and goals.

What types of students have you worked with?

Every type under the Sun. From young Kids, Teens, and Adults. From Beginners, and advancing intermediates preparing for music university. To working professionals wanting to expand their knowledge.

Tell us about your passion for teaching

My passion for teaching is paramount to my life as a musician, and as a person. I have taught professionally since I was fifteen years old. I still absolutely love to witness the growth and satisfaction of my students as they progress and meet their goals and pass their milestones. Learning music is an amazing addition to ones life.

What advice would you give aspiring students?

My advice to any student is to ask yourself first what you love the most about guitar and the music that moves you. Then pursue those interests. Not what you think you should play or learn. But what you want and are driven to play, and learn. Finding a teacher that is the right fit for you. That you feel a connection with is the most important aspect. One that has the knowledge and experience to help you develop your skill sets and will be an inspiration to fuel your desire to learn and be your best.
