What inspires me about teaching yoga is to see the same glow, the same calm, the same sense of empowerment as I have gained progressively rise up in my students. They come in tired, scattered, floppy and leave upright, smiling and anchored. My goal in teaching is to give students the tools to journey on this vitalizing, empowering and enlightened life state for their bodies, hearts and minds. I give collective as well as one-on-one classes in all settings - not only in a room on a mat, but on beaches, in yards and gardens, in the woods, on the street - on bare surfaces without a mat. I have been avidly practicing yoga for 10 years and recei...

Michelle R. says, "Ever heard of a personal trainer who does in-gym testing with diabetics to find the best workout for them AND lower their insulin usage? I have :-) Scott conferred with my doctor on a regular basis to help me understand that my choices and consistency have a direct impact on my quality of life and longevity. I want to be alive to see my daughter get married. Within 6 months of 3x/week workouts, I had cut my daily insulin usage in half, which directly correlates to life expectancy in Type I Diabetics. I was only doing what felt like the right level of exertion, and doing some "in gym" circuit weight training - recording blood sugar levels before and after each circuit, and adjusting my insulin pump accordingly. We learned a lot about my energy, my abilities, and what workouts were right for me. You can see from my photos that I lost a ton of weight, streamlined, toned up, got much stronger and even more athletic. After Scott left the Dallas area for Houston, I found another gym and personal trainer, but something was missing. So I made a couple of week long trips to Houston to work with Scott every day to fine-tune my program and get re-energized. After a year in Houston, Scott moved back to Los Angeles, and that's when we did online coaching from time to time to keep me on track. " Read more

Your meditation questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do meditation classes cost near me?

Meditation classes cost $15 to $30 per person for a group session. One-on-one sessions cost $60 to $150 per hour for a more individualized experience. Some teachers offer online virtual classes for groups or individuals with ongoing monthly plans.

Higher prices apply for supplemental add-ons to enhance meditation, such as aromatherapy or sound baths with Tibetan singing bowls.

What should you expect at a meditation class?

Meditation classes typically start with an introductory talk. Then everyone closes their eyes and sits still. Classes can include a simple guided breathing technique to reduce stress and tension. If it's a guided meditation session, then the teacher speaks each instruction for focusing.

Note: The length of the silent pauses during the class will vary depending on the technique and style. Some meditation classes are in complete silence from beginning to end. Afterward, there may be a questions and answer session and light refreshments.

Why should you go to a meditation class?

Benefits from going to a mediation class include:

  • Reducing stress and releasing mental tension
  • Increasing self-awareness
  • Enhancing creativity and imagination
  • Promoting mental clarity by focusing on the present moment
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Decreasing anxiety
  • Helping to relieve depression
  • Boosting personal and spiritual growth

How long is a meditation class?

Most meditation classes last for 30 to 60 minutes. Longer classes on meditation retreats typically have a short break in between for bathroom trips and stretching your legs.

How do you prepare for a meditation class?

Do prepare for a meditation class by taking a bathroom break, drinking some water, and doing a few gentle stretches to get into a comfortable sitting posture.

Do not eat a large meal or drink alcohol less than 2 hours before class because these things can make you fall asleep when trying to meditate. Having a lot of caffeine before a meditation class can make it harder to sit still.

What do you bring to a meditation class?

Things to bring to a meditation class include:

  • A change of comfortable clothing if you're coming from the office
  • A meditation pillow, yoga mat, or bench to sit on
  • An eye mask if the lighting is distracting
  • A journal and pen to track insights

Tip: Ask the meditation center or teacher beforehand about which items they have available.

What should you wear to a meditation class?

The ideal clothing to wear for a meditation class is comfortable clothing that lets you to breathe easily and sit on the floor or stretch a little. Loose-fitting clothing is ideal.

What classes complement meditation classes?

Yoga classes complement meditation classes since the postures prepare the body and mind for meditation. Yoga classes cost $15 to $25 per group class while a private lesson costs $30 to $70 per class. Tai Chi classes also help focus the mind for meditation.

How do I find a meditation class near me?

When searching for a nearby meditation class, first decide which type of meditation you are interested in. Then compare class fees and read their reviews on Google and Lessons. After booking, keep a copy of the refund policy and terms and conditions for your records.

What questions do I ask meditation teachers?

  • How long have you been teaching?
  • Have you taken any meditation retreats or courses, and if so, where were you trained?
  • What is the minimum experience required for a meditation teacher here?
  • Which type of meditation do you teach?
  • Do you have chairs available if I can't sit on the ground?
  • Are private guided meditations and coaching available online?
  • How long will the class take, and how many people attend?
  • Are your classes affiliated with religious beliefs?
  • Do you offer refunds if I don’t like the class?
  • Can I get a discount if I book multiple classes or a meditation retreat?

  • What happens during one of your classes?
  • What should I bring to the class, and do you have lockers to store my things?

This review is a bit overdue, but I made sure that I took the time to write it because Donna deserves it. My girlfriend and I have been seeing her for 2 months now and have seen great results already. I particularly appreciate the holistic approach Donna takes - she is knowledgeable in strength training and in helping recommend the necessary dietary plan to meet your goals. She works well with injuries and emphasized the importance on stretching and nutrients. Personal training is both an investment and demanding. If you're going to do it, you should do it with Donna.
