Susan S. says, "I studied under Rogelio under a different school, prior to Academia Phonation Foundation. I signed up for voice lessons September 2019, in preparation for returning to a choir. I don’t play the piano and was concerned I’d struggle learning music on my own. I hesitated as the school seemed geared toward children but was assured, they also had adult students. The first evening I met with Rogelio I was immediately put at ease. He was eager to ensure I felt comfortable and got what I needed from our weekly lessons. We worked together weekly both focusing on my choir music trouble spots but also taking the time to find my solo voice. Unfortunately, we only had 5 months of in-person learning until COVID shutdown not only the school but my choir. I hesitated to continue voice lessons but decided to give virtual learning a try. That turned out to be a great decision and Rogelio was very patient with the process. He pushed me out of my comfort zone and had me work on solo pieces I would never have dreamed of otherwise. I spent the summer learning “Oh Thou That Tellest Good Tidings” and “But Who May Abide the Day of His Coming” from Handel’s Messiah. I am selfishly sad to know I will not be working with him much longer, but I’m excited for him to have new opportunities. It has been a blessing to work with him and I’m a better musician for it. Your Singing Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much are singing lessons?

Singing lessons cost $50 to $90 per hour on average. Prices vary depending on the teacher's location, experience, reputation, and whether you're taking a private or group lesson. Group lessons typically cost less per person than private lessons, but you may not get as much personal attention and feedback in a group setting.

  • Some singing teachers charge a flat rate for a specified increment of time, typically in 30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute increments.
  • Many coaches offer package deals to purchase 2 to 10+ lessons at a time and reduce the cost per lesson.

Do singing lessons work?

Singing lessons won't change your sound completely, but they can help improve your sound by strengthening your vocal cords and improving your range and tone.

What do singing lessons teach you?

Singing lessons involve more than just your voice. A vocal coach will teach you how to hold and improve your posture, which gives your diaphragm optimal room to expand. You also learn proper breathing techniques and how to use your breath to improve your tone. Singing lessons also help you improve your diction—the way you articulate your words when singing—as well as your ability to match specific pitches.

Can adults take singing lessons?

Yes, adults can absolutely take singing lessons. While starting singing lessons at a young age gives you more time to develop your voice, it's never too late to begin learning and improve your singing voice.

How do I find the best singing lessons near me?

Follow these guidelines to help you choose the best singing lessons near you:

  • Check out their reviews on Lessons.com and Google.
  • Get at least three estimates from teachers with similar credentials.
  • Ask for recommendations from others in the local music community.
  • Do a trial meeting or lesson if possible with several teachers to find the best fit for your goals.
  • Ask them about their training and credentials.
  • Ask about what specific methods and techniques they teach.
  • Ask about the specific progress they've made with other students.
  • Make sure their schedule matches your availability.

What questions should I ask when choosing a singing teacher?

Ask these questions to help you choose the best singing teacher for you:

  • How long have you been teaching singing?
  • Can you share any success stories?
  • Do I need to have a good voice already to become a better singer?
  • How long does it typically take to see improvement?
  • Do you offer any package deals?
  • What is your teaching schedule?
  • How long are your singing lessons?
  • How often should I practice?
  • Do you offer private or group lessons?
  • Where do you teach?
  • Do you offer online lessons using video calling?

Nicolette was such a great instructor! She was always very knowledgeable and patient with me. I learned so much from her. The lessons were started off with warm-ups/breathing exercises. Then we would work on a song that we chose together. I would sing as she made notes on what I did and didn't do well and then we'd go over those notes. The lessons were always VERY constructive and she would always leave me with exercises to help me improve between our weekly lessons. 10/10

In 1984 I was in a bad car wreck. The resulting coma left me with a severely monotone voice for years. I worked with speech -therapists and later professional singers. I had nearly given up! I discovered David Way just before the pandemic, his education and experience were evident I was impressed with the way he evaluated my abilities and deficits. He spent time coming up with a plan. When we started working together I could only sing five notes; now I’m able to sing two octaves easily! His talent is impressive…
