A phenomenal coach, Deb has the gift to see what we are truly capable of as artists, as well as the honesty, instinct and passion to push us to be brave enough to go there. Ruslana C. says, "I'm an adult who signed up for singing lessons in search of a new hobby and to work through anxiety so that I can start singing at social events. I am 29 y/o and have never tried singing in the past (not even at birthday parties - too nervous to sing!). I found Gabriel through this site and have been taking lessons for about 5 months now. I have already noticed a HUGE difference in my ability to hit the right notes and in my confidence level when singing! I even started singing around family members, which I never would have imagined doing prior to starting lessons with Gabriel. What stands out to me about our lessons: - his level of expertise in bel canto - his ability to explain correct singing techniques in very clear, simple, understandable terms - his ability to make me feel comfortable, I have 0 anxiety when working with him - his patience (we go over parts of songs repeatedly until I get them right, he makes sure we don't move on until I use the proper technique!) - how he tailors lessons to fit his students' preferences. Example: I mentioned I'm interested in learning other genres in addition to bel canto. At any given time, he has me learn two songs - one bel canto song that he chooses based on my voice/skill level and one other song that I choose that isn't necessarily bel canto. - his flexible scheduling. I work full time with an unpredictable schedule. Gabriel is very open to working with my schedule. - he holds optional biannual recitals for all of his students, which are great opportunities to practice performing in front of people. Overall, I plan to continue taking lessons with Gabriel and I highly recommend him as a singing teacher!" Read more

Gabrielle O. says, "Michelle is incredibly knowledgeable about the voice and the mechanics of the instrument. She is able to explain complex ideas in ways that make it very approachable and has multiple methods and imagery for making a connection to the concept. I am classically trained, haven't sung for a while and am interested in Musical Theatre and Michelle has done such a wonderful job of blending together my interests with our goals for the lessons. My voice has grown so much since we started lessons together and I am so grateful for her ability to share her wisdom in a way that is meaningful and personable as well as her ability to encourage me. I learn so much every lesson and throughly enjoy my time learning with Michelle! I cannot recommend her enough!" Read more

Your Singing Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much are singing lessons?

Singing lessons cost $50 to $90 per hour on average. Prices vary depending on the teacher's location, experience, reputation, and whether you're taking a private or group lesson. Group lessons typically cost less per person than private lessons, but you may not get as much personal attention and feedback in a group setting.

  • Some singing teachers charge a flat rate for a specified increment of time, typically in 30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute increments.
  • Many coaches offer package deals to purchase 2 to 10+ lessons at a time and reduce the cost per lesson.

Do singing lessons work?

Singing lessons won't change your sound completely, but they can help improve your sound by strengthening your vocal cords and improving your range and tone.

What do singing lessons teach you?

Singing lessons involve more than just your voice. A vocal coach will teach you how to hold and improve your posture, which gives your diaphragm optimal room to expand. You also learn proper breathing techniques and how to use your breath to improve your tone. Singing lessons also help you improve your diction—the way you articulate your words when singing—as well as your ability to match specific pitches.

Can adults take singing lessons?

Yes, adults can absolutely take singing lessons. While starting singing lessons at a young age gives you more time to develop your voice, it's never too late to begin learning and improve your singing voice.

How do I find the best singing lessons near me?

Follow these guidelines to help you choose the best singing lessons near you:

  • Check out their reviews on Lessons.com and Google.
  • Get at least three estimates from teachers with similar credentials.
  • Ask for recommendations from others in the local music community.
  • Do a trial meeting or lesson if possible with several teachers to find the best fit for your goals.
  • Ask them about their training and credentials.
  • Ask about what specific methods and techniques they teach.
  • Ask about the specific progress they've made with other students.
  • Make sure their schedule matches your availability.

What questions should I ask when choosing a singing teacher?

Ask these questions to help you choose the best singing teacher for you:

  • How long have you been teaching singing?
  • Can you share any success stories?
  • Do I need to have a good voice already to become a better singer?
  • How long does it typically take to see improvement?
  • Do you offer any package deals?
  • What is your teaching schedule?
  • How long are your singing lessons?
  • How often should I practice?
  • Do you offer private or group lessons?
  • Where do you teach?
  • Do you offer online lessons using video calling?

I have been taking lessons from Gabriel for the last 2 years and have seen huge improvements in my vocal abilities. His use of the Bel Canto method has helped me discover things about my voice that I did not know I was capable of. Gabriel always taylors each lesson to what my voice needs at any given moment and is able to adapt what we are working on based on how my voice is feeling that day or what it is capable of doing at any given moment. Not only have I learned to sing better, but he has taught me how to protect my voice by using proper techniques, breathing techniques and vocalizations. When I hear my voice from when I began lessons and now I can't believe the improvement.

Within ONE lesson, Howard could pinpoint EXACTLY what my trouble areas are, and not only is he able to articulate a very clear plan for dealing with those, but he has also helped me with the burdening amount of pain that plagues my joints and muscles when I play something technically demanding! Furthermore, he is very focused, understanding, knowledgeable and gentle! After having many verbally.... difficult teachers whose teaching involved quite a bit of negative reinforcement, it is an absolute pleasure and an eye opening experience to have a patient, understanding teacher. Some people may learn quite well in that fashion, and there was a period of time when I actually believed, or rather was brainwashed into thinking that being verbally berated would serve as motivation. But now I see quite clearly that is not the case: I learn a lot better and I am more motivated to practice when I find it a pleasure to go to my piano lessons! Thank you, Howard for all your dedication, patience and knowledge!
