David Paul Torres is a concert guitarist born in Los Angeles, California. His love for both the aggressive sounds of amplified guitar and the natural elegance of classical guitar has helped refine his approach to playing, performing and writing music. His performances have ranged from the intimate crowds of the Whisky-a-go-go, to larger audiences of Rockstar Mayhem Festival, where he and his band Ophiuchus played to a crowd of over ten thousand fans. Classically, he has performed masterclasses for guitarists Celin Romero and Ana Vidovic, and was one of the opening performers for Ana Vidovic’s concert in Los Angeles concert in 2017 and P ... My music history: I am a music major from CSUN.  I started playing guitar when I was nine years old.  I took private lessons right away until I began learning by ear.  I spent the rest of my childhood by playing in bands, finally playing with the best band out, the Novelles, a Happening.  We recorded an album in 1968 which wasn't released until 2005 and again in 2007 on Radioactive label.  We haven't seen one cent.  As for Ed Benson, he enrolled at Los Angeles Valley College near the age of 33.  He learned a lot about music composition and classical guitar.  I took classical guitar lessons my entire tim ... Connect The Dots Music

Connect The Dots Music

I teach music because after taking lessons for years, I still hadn’t been taught how to just sit down and play something from the radio, play different styles, or write my own songs.  All I could do was read music, which limited me to classical and theater music.  This is the situation most students of traditional lessons find themselves in.  How unfulfilling for all that time and money; there is so much more!  I discovered it in college when I took from a teacher who would eventually become a coach to many “American Idol” finalists.  Over the past 20+ years, I have been teaching students not only ho ... My teaching approach: I give the student all the tools he needs to get up on stage at their local blues jam and kick some butt! I give them the musical tools to improvise, play excellent rhythm, perform with authority, creativity, and imagination. I stress learning from the best but not being a clone. Having a unique identity on the guitar is the most important thing. I always begin with building on what the student already knows, then taking them to cool and far out places. I find out what music stimulates the student most, then work from there. Good times. My guitar lessons take place in: The teacher's studio Guitar Lessons with me take p ... View Profile

Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.
