Frequently asked questions

First and foremost get them playing a song during their first lesson if they are a beginner. If the new student is experienced at playing I have them play a piece that they would like. I then test their reading skill with music they havesn't played before. This gives me a good idea what books they will need to start with.
I've been teaching all ages of students and levels of expertise for 25 years. They say what you teach you also learn. I've been fortunate to have wonderful students during my career who taught me much. Every person is different in how they respond to learning a new skill or tuning up the skill they already have.
Pricing depends on the distance I travel to the lessons and also the length of the lesson.
I actually began teaching when I was 14. My mom saw a talent in me I didn't know I had. She asked me to teach my little brother who was 8 at the time. I told her I didn't think I could do that. It's amazing to me that he still plays the piano and now is enjoying singing and karaoke many years later. That gave me the confidence to study music and pursue a teaching career.
I have worked with a few autistic children. It was a surprise to me that they did very well. They could focus on practicing much longer than the other kids. One student became a composer. I taught him theory which he loved and advanced very quickly. He also became much more socialible. I've also worked with a few people who were ill and knew they wouldn't live but a few years...Those experiences were wonderful. Playing the piano and creating music is very therapeutic.
Every year I have a holiday party for the kids where parents are not invited. Many of the children don't celebrate Christmas because of their religious beliefs. But if I only give them music that is non religious the parents are okay with them performing . Last year's party was wonderful as it was the first time the kids were allowed to be together after the covid shut down. It was like a big reunion for them.
ALWAYS HAVE AN INTRODUCTORY LESSON. This way you and the prospective teacher will know if you're compatible and will enjoy working together.
Time needed to practice each week. If student is very busy he/she may not have the practice time to make their lessons worthwhile. I usually recommed 3 hours a week. The most ideal is 30 min everyday. Some of the high school students practice more on weekends and less during weekdays.
