About

Darlene Alfuso has been a leader in music education since 1992, holding a degree in violin performance, while inspiring her private students and emphacizing the many styles and techniques of violin playing.

Her philosophy of teaching is based on encouraging her student's individuality and instilling self-motivation to have fun while learning, and excelling in playing the violin. She has held the position of violin coach in the TUSD, since 1999. She has also served as the beginning string coach for the Anaheim after school GATE program, as well as the advanced string coach throughout Anaheim and Buena Park elementary schools.

Darlene has been a professional violinist for the past 35 years, performing with local symphony and chamber orchestras, ballet and theatrical productions and with a expansive variety of name artists at venues throughout Southern California.

I enjoy the connections that I make with each student. I especially appreciate all the challenges that are brought to me, through all the many different levels of talent and musicianship.

I learned violin with Darlene for five years, and the lessons I’ve had with her are some of the most positive experiences of my life. Darlene’s engaging and passionate dedication to her students is just one of the many things I appreciated about lessons with her. Learning violin was made so enjoyable by how patiently she would teach each lesson, and how sensitively she would direct me in my areas of improvement. Each lesson felt genuine and specialized to the things I, as an individual student, needed. Darlene’s attentive and nurturing guidance really fostered my violin abilities, especially as I entered higher levels of orchestra in school. Her lessons helped shape my confidence to skillfully play more complex pieces. Her open-mindedness created an educational environment in which I would feel comfortable to make mistakes and learn from them. Beyond violin, Darlene’s warm and empathetic nature allowed for a meaningful connection. I’m thankful for the lessons I’ve learned from her, violin and more. Thank you, Darlene!!

Darlene is wonderful! She tutors from the very beginning player to the very advanced. She is a working musician who has worked with my students at a local high school for 20 years as well as teaching my child for 8 years, taking him from Hot Cross Buns to the Beethoven Violin Concerto! VERY personable!

Darlene has been more than just a violin instructor - she is a mentor, role model, a friend, and coach. I have been playing the violin for nearly 11 years now. Darlene was my violin teacher for over 6 years, from when I first started playing in middle school until I moved away for college. She is patient, kind, understanding, while ensuring that students are held accountable for practicing and putting in the effort. With her guidance, I made it into my high school’s highest tier orchestra, played at Carnegie Hall twice, and joined my university’s symphony orchestra. She showed me that music should be shared with others and is a way to give back, which inspired my later musical endeavors at university. Over the years, Darlene has helped me develop a love for music that has shaped the violinist - and the person - I am today.

Mrs. Alfuso was a tremendous help to me in learning music! When I entered high school I found myself surrounded by folks who had been taking private lessons for years. She helped me bridge that gap through her lessons where I learned theory, scales, different positions (3rd, 5th which were so foreign at the time) and how to better perform music. My music director, Mr. Jim Kollias also noticed the growth. I owe it to her for helping me get to Carnegie Hall!! Thanks Mrs. Alfuso!

I really appreciated her professionalism, patience and good humor, especially when things were difficult for me. She has an amazing library of music and we could always find pieces that I enjoyed learning.

    Frequently asked questions

I begin by asking the new student if he/she has had prior musical experience.

If a student is a beginner, I start by teaching him/her how to hold the violin and bow, the names of the violin strings, and we begin by plucking open strings in different rhythms.  I will ask the student to purchase a beginning book to use for all future lessons. This beginning book will follow my lesson plan for learning to read music.

If the student has had prior experience, I will listen to them play. We will discuss right and left hand position and make corrections as needed. For following lessons, I will ask the student to purchase additional books that I require, covering scales, techniques and solos pieces.

I have a degree in Violin Performance from CSUF, have taught privately and with school music programs for over 25 years, and have played professionally for 30 years.

    My fee is $70.00/lesson. Four lessons/month = $280.00

An invoice will be emailed to each student before the beginning of each new month. The total payment is due before the first lesson of each month.

Payment to be made via PayPal.

I began teaching because of the wonderful experience I had as a child, with my first violin teacher.

I have worked with students of all ages, beginners and experienced.

I'm especially proud of the relationship that I establish with each student. Many of my students have come to me as young children and have stayed with me through high school and college. Some of my past students remain in contact with me as a friend and colleague.

A memorable event was showing up to play a concert and sitting next to me was a former student, who is now a professional violinist.
